Samsung Electronics has unveiled its first multi-folding smartphone, Galaxy Z TriFold. The new device is Samsung’s attempt to strengthen its position in an industry where competition is expected to heighten in 2026.

At the unveiling on Tuesday, the company noted that the new foldable device is specifically made for customers who want it, rather than for large-scale production. The device is Samsung’s attempt to level up with Chinese rivals, including Xiaomi and Huawei.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is priced at N3.5 million ($2,440.17), and uses three panels that can be unfolded into a 253.1 millimetre (10-inch) display. The device is nearly 25% larger than its latest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

While reacting to the latest addition, Alex Lim, Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President and head of the Korea Sales & Marketing Office, explained that the TriFold could drive further growth in key markets.

I believe the foldable market will continue to grow, and the TriFold in particular could act as a catalyst that drives more explosive growth in key parts of the segment,” he said.

As regards pricing, Lim mentioned that memory chip and other component costs have risen sharply, making the selling price a difficult decision. Galaxy Z TriFold supports superfast charging that powers the phone to 50% in 30 minutes and features Samsung’s largest battery in its flagship models.

The device, produced in South Korea, will go on sale domestically on 12 December and be rolled out in China, Singapore, Taiwan and the UAE before the year runs out.

Foldable phones: Samsung ramps up for competition with Galaxy Z Trifold

Counterpoint research shows that foldable phones are expected to account for less than 2% of the total smartphone market this year and will make up under 3% by 2027. In the race to stay ahead of the competition, Samsung is aiming to lead in terms of showcasing advanced technology.

The report revealed that Samsung’s share of the foldable market jumped to 64% in the third quarter, up from 9% in the previous quarter. This demonstrates Samsung’s strength and its goal to create an edge in the race.

As the foldable smartphone market is expected to grow 14% this year, followed by annual growth in the 30% range in 2026 and 2027, competition is heating up.

Huawei has already piloted the initiative following the launch of the industry’s first TriFold phone in September 2024. Apple is set to enter the segment as it’s expected to release its first foldable next year.

However, analysts believe that high production costs might hinder manufacturers from considering mass production.
