Algeria will shortly award a landmark project for the construction of a monorail in the capital Algiers after the completion of technical studies.
China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has finalised feasibility and technical investigations and is working with the transport ministry to launch the plan, the Arabic-language daily Elkhabar said, quoting official sources.
The move is intended to ease traffic congestion in the capital, improve life quality and attract tourists to the city, the report said.
The monorail will run nearly 67km. The authorities have not yet disclosed funding options or the track layout.
Algeria’s ministry of public works and infrastructure reported in late 2025 that it was drafting a strategic plan to improve mobility and ease chronic traffic congestion in the capital of more than 3 million people.
The plan calls for major investments, extending the tramway and metro networks, completing the central train station and three additional rail stations, and launching new cable-car lines. It also envisions the construction of two monorail lines.
The proposed systems are intended to supplement Algiers’ existing transport network, which includes 19km of metro lines, serving about 46 million passengers annually, several cable-car routes, and bus services operated by the state-owned ETUSA and private companies.
Local media reports have said capacity constraints, especially in bus services, often lead to delays and overcrowding.
Officials say the new projects should help relieve pressure on the city’s transport system and improve links between residential neighbourhoods, universities and key service centres across the capital.
