Spanish Police Detain Suspect Over Alleged Crypto Terror Financing Network Near Barcelona

Structured crypto transfers and luxury goods were allegedly used to hide funds linked to terrorism financing in Spain.

Spanish authorities have detained a Chinese national near Barcelona over alleged links between illicit crypto flows and terrorism financing. As per reports, a small local business served as a smokescreen for the operation. Officials now frame the case as a national security issue with cross-border reach.

Hair Salon Near Barcelona Tied to Alleged Illegal Terrorism Activities

Financial tracing of the operation began months ago during a separate fraud inquiry. According to investigators, suspicious wallet activity soon drew attention from regional police.

During the investigation, officials identified repeated crypto transfers that appeared to be planned rather than casual. As evidence mounted, other agencies, including the counterterrorism units, followed the case.

As per police reports, the 38-year-old suspect ran a hair salon on the outskirts of Barcelona. Investigators believe the business served as a front, allowing the accused to manage several digital wallets out of public view.

At least 31 transfers moved close to €600,000 through cryptocurrency channels. Analysts linked destination addresses to a funding structure used by Hamas, investigators said.

Crypto Wallet Patterns Raise Terror Financing Concerns

Patterns suggested deliberate structuring to mask recipients. Blockchain records alone did not tell the full story. Investigators relied on human analysis to map intent and relationships between wallets.

Authorities outlined key warning signs tied to the alleged operation:

  • Repeated transfers split into smaller amounts over short intervals
  • Wallets interacting with known high-risk addresses.
  • Routing paths designed to delay tracing efforts.
  • Conversion steps aimed at distancing funds from original sources.

Officers raided the suspect’s salon and home, seizing assets including crypto assets and large cash amounts. Jewelry, computers, and several mobile phones were also recovered from the scene.

About 9,000 cigars were also recovered. And interestingly, this has raised fresh questions about money laundering. During the operation, bank accounts linked to the suspect were frozen, with the combined value of withheld assets pegged at over €370,000.

Investigators believe the seized goods may indicate another way the money was laundered. Digital funds were likely turned into luxury items that can be sold or traded. Police are still reviewing devices to identify other people involved.

A few years ago, the European Union had listed Hamas as a terrorist group. Spanish authorities warned that militant groups have resorted to moving funds through digital assets due to the lack of cross-border oversight. Authorities called for closer coordination between the financial pipeline and law enforcement for improved regulation.
