Vitalik Buterin Calls for Practical Utility in Crypto and Web3 Innovation

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has once again raised a critical alarm for the cryptocurrency ecosystem, emphasizing the urgent need for crypto projects to return to creating real utility and practical applications. In a market increasingly dominated by copy-and-paste chains and duplicated smart contracts, Buterin warns that the focus on quantity over quality is undermining true innovation in decentralized finance and Web3.

The current landscape of blockchain projects, according to Buterin, is heavily skewed toward replication. Numerous new EVM-compatible chains are emerging, often copying existing smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) wholesale, then connecting to Ethereum through bridges that are slow and pose security risks. While these strategies allow for rapid deployment and marketing-driven growth, they rarely generate meaningful value for users or the broader ecosystem.

Buterin’s critique highlights a structural problem within the crypto industry: easy replication has replaced true innovation. Forking an existing chain or copying a DeFi protocol can be executed in hours, enabling new entrants to ride on the success of established projects without contributing original functionality. This trend produces an ecosystem rich in appearances but poor in substance, where marketing often substitutes for real technical advancement or community value creation.

The implications for the Web3 and crypto economy are significant. When value creation is superficial, users are exposed to higher systemic risk, including vulnerabilities in duplicated smart contracts, inefficient bridge mechanisms, and untested protocols. This risk, combined with the proliferation of cloned applications, can erode trust and slow the adoption of genuinely transformative technologies. Buterin’s warning is a call for developers to prioritize substance over speed and novelty over replication.

In this context, the role of networks like Pi Network becomes especially relevant. Unlike ecosystems dominated by copycat projects, Pi Network focuses on practical applications, decentralized economic utility, and community-driven development. By emphasizing the creation of real-use applications and testing environments such as Testnet apps, Pi Network exemplifies the type of forward-looking approach that Buterin advocates. Pioneers actively contribute to building infrastructure and testing innovations, ensuring that applications are robust, functional, and designed to deliver measurable utility.

The broader message from Buterin is clear: cryptocurrency should move beyond speculative hype and superficial launches. True value emerges when projects solve real-world problems, provide scalable and secure solutions, and empower users through functional applications. Networks that emphasize innovation, infrastructure, and utility are more likely to achieve lasting impact, user trust, and sustainable growth.

Copying chains and contracts may offer short-term attention, but the long-term cost is significant. Projects that fail to invest in original development risk being irrelevant once users and investors prioritize platforms with genuine utility. This challenge extends across the crypto and Web3 ecosystem, where practical adoption, secure architecture, and effective community engagement are increasingly decisive factors for success.

Furthermore, the emphasis on utility aligns with emerging trends in decentralized finance, digital assets, and Web3 applications. Platforms that deliver meaningful functionality—whether through peer-to-peer transactions, decentralized marketplaces, or programmable finance—are positioning themselves to become integral components of the next-generation digital economy. Buterin’s critique underscores the importance of prioritizing these outcomes over marketing-driven growth or superficial imitation.

Pi Network’s ongoing initiatives resonate with this philosophy. By creating a testing environment for pioneers to experiment with applications, providing mechanisms for user feedback, and fostering practical development on blockchain infrastructure, the network is demonstrating how a focus on real utility strengthens community engagement and long-term adoption. These efforts reflect a commitment to creating measurable value rather than merely replicating existing models.

In conclusion, Vitalik Buterin’s warning is a reminder that the cryptocurrency ecosystem must prioritize practical applications, utility, and innovation over mere replication. Copying chains and smart contracts may be fast and easy, but it produces thin value and exposes users to unnecessary risks. Platforms that focus on meaningful development, robust infrastructure, and active community participation are better positioned to thrive in the evolving Web3 landscape.

Networks like Pi Network illustrate how utility-driven development, careful testing, and community collaboration can generate long-term value. As the crypto ecosystem matures, the projects that adhere to these principles will stand out, not just for their marketing presence, but for their ability to deliver functional, innovative solutions that benefit users and shape the future of decentralized finance.

The path forward for crypto, as Buterin suggests, is clear: return to building real utility, invest in innovation, and ensure that every new application delivers tangible value to users. Only then can the ecosystem move beyond noise, hype, and imitation, toward sustainable growth and meaningful adoption.

The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For

The post The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Visions of future technology are often prescient about the broad strokes while flubbing the details. The tablets in “2001: A Space Odyssey” do indeed look like iPads, but you never see the astronauts paying for subscriptions or wasting hours on Candy Crush.  Channel factories are one vision that arose early in the history of the Lightning Network to address some challenges that Lightning has faced from the beginning. Despite having grown to become Bitcoin’s most successful layer-2 scaling solution, with instant and low-fee payments, Lightning’s scale is limited by its reliance on payment channels. Although Lightning shifts most transactions off-chain, each payment channel still requires an on-chain transaction to open and (usually) another to close. As adoption grows, pressure on the blockchain grows with it. The need for a more scalable approach to managing channels is clear. Channel factories were supposed to meet this need, but where are they? In 2025, subnetworks are emerging that revive the impetus of channel factories with some new details that vastly increase their potential. They are natively interoperable with Lightning and achieve greater scale by allowing a group of participants to open a shared multisig UTXO and create multiple bilateral channels, which reduces the number of on-chain transactions and improves capital efficiency. Achieving greater scale by reducing complexity, Ark and Spark perform the same function as traditional channel factories with new designs and additional capabilities based on shared UTXOs.  Channel Factories 101 Channel factories have been around since the inception of Lightning. A factory is a multiparty contract where multiple users (not just two, as in a Dryja-Poon channel) cooperatively lock funds in a single multisig UTXO. They can open, close and update channels off-chain without updating the blockchain for each operation. Only when participants leave or the factory dissolves is an on-chain transaction…

Crypto News 17 September 2025 | 18:00 Discover why BlockDAG’s upcoming Awakening Testnet launch makes it the best crypto to buy today as Story (IP) price jumps to $11.75 and Hyperliquid hits new highs. Recent crypto market numbers show strength but also some limits. The Story (IP) price jump has been sharp, fueled by big buybacks and speculation, yet critics point out that revenue still lags far behind its valuation. The Hyperliquid (HYPE) price looks solid around the mid-$50s after a new all-time high, but questions remain about sustainability once the hype around USDH proposals cools down. So the obvious question is: why chase coins that are either stretched thin or at risk of retracing when you could back a network that’s already proving itself on the ground? That’s where BlockDAG comes in. While other chains are stuck dealing with validator congestion or outages, BlockDAG’s upcoming Awakening Testnet will be stress-testing its EVM-compatible smart chain with real miners before listing. For anyone looking for the best crypto coin to buy, the choice between waiting on fixes or joining live progress feels like an easy one. BlockDAG: Smart Chain Running Before Launch Ethereum continues to wrestle with gas congestion, and Solana is still known for network freezes, yet BlockDAG is already showing a different picture. Its upcoming Awakening Testnet, set to launch on September 25, isn’t just a demo; it’s a live rollout where the chain’s base protocols are being stress-tested with miners connected globally. EVM compatibility is active, account abstraction is built in, and tools like updated vesting contracts and Stratum integration are already functional. Instead of waiting for fixes like other networks, BlockDAG is proving its infrastructure in real time. What makes this even more important is that the technology is operational before the coin even hits exchanges. That…
