Block is enabling Square Bitcoin for more than four million U.S. merchants, integrating the Lightning Network so customers can pay by QR code, with optional instant USD conversion at checkout and waived processing fees through 2026 to accelerate adoption.
The rollout targets an installed base of roughly 4 million U.S. sellers using existing point-of-sale registers, now part of Block. Meanwhile, software updates will add Bitcoin acceptance without new hardware, preserving in-store workflows and reducing implementation friction for small retailers.
Block says the payments option builds on its Bitcoin Conversions feature from 2024 and first launched on Oct 8, with a full rollout beginning Nov 10. Merchants will accept bitcoin via QR codes and can choose to hold crypto or convert receipts to dollars instantly. Importantly, processing fees will be waived for one year, throughout 2026, to encourage trials; see the Block press release for company details.
All bitcoin transactions on Square will route over the Lightning Network to speed settlement and lower costs, which supports lightning network payments and reduces exposure to chargebacks. As a result, transactions can clear nearly instantly and improve microtransaction economics for small-ticket purchases.
The QR code flow lets customers pay with a wallet app by scanning a merchant-presented code, allowing businesses to accept bitcoin qr code payments with minimal cashier training. However, merchants should plan for liquidity management and reconciliation of off-chain receipts against point-of-sale records.
Jack Dorsey has long championed Bitcoin as a payments layer, and this integration brings that vision into mainstream retail. Operationally, optional instant USD conversion usually reduces settlement risk and simplifies merchant accounting, which could accelerate trials among small retailers.
Larger merchants will, however, need to manage channel liquidity and reconcile Lightning flows against existing systems. As Block noted in its announcement, “Starting Oct. 8, Square will enable Bitcoin payments for merchants, with optional conversion to USD at checkout,” Block.
