The new valuation represents a jump from Anthropic’s previous $183 billion valuation in September. The terms of the company’s next funding round are still being finalized. A source close to the deal confirmed these details.
Anthropic has committed to purchasing $30 billion of Azure compute capacity from Microsoft. The company has also contracted for additional compute capacity up to 1 gigawatt. This includes Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called the partnership a dream come true. He said the company has admired Anthropic’s work for a long time. This marks the first deep partnership between Nvidia and Anthropic.
The companies will work together on engineering and design. They plan to optimize Anthropic’s models for performance and efficiency. Nvidia architectures will be optimized for Anthropic’s specific workloads.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research executives. CEO Dario Amodei led the group. The company develops a family of large language models called Claude.
Amazon Web Services became Anthropic’s primary cloud provider in 2023. AWS became the primary training partner in 2024. Anthropic said Amazon will continue serving in both roles.
Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI since 2019. OpenAI launched ChatGPT and became one of the fastest-growing commercial entities. The company completed a recapitalization last month.
Microsoft holds a stake in OpenAI’s for-profit business valued at $135 billion. This represents roughly 27% of the company on an as-converted diluted basis. Microsoft formally outlined its partnership with OpenAI last month.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed the multiple partnerships. He said the industry needs to move beyond zero-sum narratives. Nadella stated the opportunity is too big for a winner-take-all approach.
The announcement comes as Nvidia prepares to report third-quarter earnings on Wednesday.
