Animoca Brands has made a strategic investment in AVAX and announced a partnership with Ava Labs to expand the Avalanche ecosystem across Asia and the Middle East, focusing on real-world asset tokenization, entertainment, and digital identity verticals.

What the Partnership Actually Covers

According to report by The Block, Animoca will use its existing regional infrastructure and institutional relationships to help commercialize Avalanche subnets and related applications in Asian and Middle Eastern markets. The two organizations will jointly provide capital deployment, product integration, and advisory support to projects building on Avalanche across the three identified verticals.

The investment in AVAX is confirmed as a direct token purchase. Animoca declined to disclose the scale or terms. AVAX was trading at approximately $9.51 to $9.55 at the time of the announcement on March 19, with a market capitalization exceeding $4.1 billion. The absence of disclosed terms is notable given Animoca’s stated preparation for a public listing. Investors evaluating a Nasdaq-bound company typically expect transparency on material investments. The non-disclosure suggests either the amount is not yet material enough to require disclosure or the terms include confidentiality provisions.

Why the Regulatory Timing Matters

The announcement follows directly from the joint SEC and CFTC guidance issued on March 17, in which regulators formally classified AVAX as a digital commodity. As covered in earlier reporting this week, that classification removes AVAX from securities regulation and places it under CFTC jurisdiction alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum.

For institutional participants like Animoca, that classification change is operationally significant. Buying a token that carries securities classification risk creates compliance complications that a digital commodity designation eliminates. The two-day gap between the regulatory clarity event and the Animoca announcement is not coincidental. Institutional investment decisions of this type do not move in two days from scratch. The SEC and CFTC guidance likely removed the final compliance barrier on a deal that was already structured.

The Three Verticals and Why Animoca Chose Them

Real-world asset tokenization is the first focus area. Avalanche already has momentum here, including the recent partnership with LuLu Financial Holdings to move remittance corridors on-chain in the Middle East. Animoca brings institutional relationships in Asia that can accelerate similar arrangements in that region.

Entertainment is where Animoca’s existing portfolio is most directly applicable. The company holds stakes in hundreds of Web3 gaming and media projects. Routing those projects toward Avalanche infrastructure rather than competing chains is a distribution advantage that Ava Labs cannot replicate through direct developer outreach alone.

Digital identity is the least developed of the three verticals but potentially the most strategically valuable in emerging markets. Identity infrastructure that integrates with on-chain applications creates persistent user relationships that are harder to replicate than transactional engagement.

The Animoca Nasdaq Timeline

The AVAX investment fits inside a broader strategic pivot. Animoca has stated a 2026 goal of shifting toward infrastructure and RWA initiatives as it prepares for a planned Nasdaq public debut through a reverse merger before year end. A direct token position in a digital commodity, combined with a formal commercial partnership with a top-tier Layer 1 developer, strengthens the infrastructure narrative Animoca needs to tell public market investors.

A gaming-heavy Web3 portfolio company seeking a Nasdaq listing is a harder story to tell in 2026 than a company with material infrastructure exposure, RWA partnerships, and institutional blockchain relationships across two of the fastest-growing digital asset regions in the world. The Ava Labs partnership advances all three of those positioning goals simultaneously.
