Mistral AI, one of Europe’s leading artificial intelligence companies, has raised $830 million in new debt. The French company said it will use the money to buy 13,800 Nvidia chips for a new data center outside Paris.
This is the first time Mistral has raised debt financing. The deal was backed by a group of seven banks, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, and MUFG.
The new data center will be located in Bruyeres-le-Chatel, a town south of Paris. Mistral expects the facility to become operational in the second quarter of 2026.
Mistral positions itself as a European alternative to large US AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. The company offers both AI models and infrastructure services to governments and enterprises.
The fundraise comes as Europe works to build out its AI capacity. Governments and companies across the continent are trying to close the gap with the US and China.
Mistral has been expanding fast. The company recently committed €1.2 billion to build AI data centers in Sweden to increase compute capacity.
The company has also set a broader infrastructure target. Mistral said it wants to secure 200 megawatts of capacity across Europe by the end of 2027.
The EU has been pushing for greater digital independence. Concerns over US foreign policy and shifting political relationships have made European AI investment a strategic priority.
Mistral is one of a small number of companies currently building what are called frontier AI models — the most advanced type of large-scale AI systems.
Mistral recently joined the Nvidia Nemotron Coalition, a global initiative focused on advancing open frontier-level AI models.
Under the partnership, Mistral’s model architecture and full-stack AI platform is being combined with Nvidia’s tools, resources, and synthetic data generation pipelines.
The Bruyeres-le-Chatel data center, powered by the 13,800 Nvidia chips from this latest raise, will form a key part of Mistral’s European infrastructure build-out.
Mistral’s latest debt raise and its Nvidia partnership come as the company continues to invest heavily in expanding its compute capacity across the continent.
