This article was first published on The Bit Journal. Elon Musk’s social media platform X is moving closer to blending financial data with online conversation as it prepares to introduce a new feature known as Smart Cashtags, a product aimed at making stock and crypto market information instantly accessible within posts.
The function, set to be publicly released in February 2026, was described by the Head of Product at X, Nikita Bier, and it will be a major improvement to the common feature in the platform, the $TICKER tagging system. Instead of being a mere mention, Smart Cashtags will serve as a live market intelligence opening.
Based on early previews, tapping a Smart Cashtag will show real-time price changes, recent posts, and curated news of the tagged asset. In the case of cryptocurrencies, the system can go a step further, connecting cashtags to smart contracts, with near real-time on-chain data being available in newly released tokens.
This is consistent with the long-held vision of Musk to make X an everything app, a concept he has focused on since he bought the platform in 2022. In this plan, X has been able to continue to grow outside of social networking, testing payments, creator monetization, and financial data integrations.
Internal mockups depict Smart Cashtags as wearing a wide variety of assets, including both common stocks, such as Berkshire Hathaway ($BRK.B) and electronic tokens, such as the Solana blockchain-based $BONK. Bier observed that the feature will initially be tested internally and user feedback will be used to shape the final version and then it will be released to a broader audience.
The leadership of X thinks that the feature may play a significant role in the way market stories are created online. The platform already contributes disproportionately to investor sentiment, especially in the crypto markets. Bier highlighted the platform’s reach by stating that billions of dollars have been affected by information published on X in decisions affecting hundreds of billions of dollars in the market.
Smart Cashtags will bridge the divide between discussion and data by integrating live price context into the posts. Certain preview images have led to the speculation that there will be future Buy and Sell buttons, although this has not been confirmed by X to support in-app trading.
Analysts speculate that in case trading functions are introduced, they would probably be implemented by collaborating with licensed brokers or crypto exchanges but not directly by X.
This is not the first financial integration done by the company. Later in late 2022, X announced briefly a cashtag project with price charts of Bitcoin, Ether and a few stock choices based on TradingView data, with links to Robinhood. That feature was subsequently removed.
Ever since, X has received money transmitter licenses in over 25 states in the U.S. as an indication of increased plans in payments and financial services, including crypto. Nevertheless, the firm has not indicated a clear deadline for when payment or trading capabilities will be launched.
This launch is as X is under more regulatory scrutiny, especially in the European Union, where the site has been fined under the Digital Services Act and challenged on the transparency of its algorithms. In response to this pressure, Musk recently said that X would open-source its recommendation algorithm.
At the moment, Smart Cashtags are still in the preview stage. However, in case of success, the feature would transform the way users monitor markets in real time by converting social discussions into real-time financial dashboards.
With X being in the verge of launching Smart Cashtags, the feature serves to underscore the vision of the platform to integrate social interaction with financial intelligence. It is unclear whether it will be expanded to become a more extensive trading environment, but its launch may lead to a significant change in the way market data are consumed online.
