Pre-Market Briefing on Oct 20: Amazon +4.98% Lifted the Nasdaq While Two Thirds of the S&P 500 Fell; SpaceX Reports Tonight

1. Today's Market: What Rose Was the Weighting, Not the Count

Unit: %, single-day change on October 19; the set spans positive and negative, so a zero line is drawn and all three share one scale. The Nasdaq reads +1.11%, the S&P 500 +0.41% and the Dow −0.07%.

The three indexes split in one session: the Nasdaq up 1.11%, the S&P 500 up 0.41%, and the Dow down 0.07%. The members tell it better still, because about two thirds of the S&P 500 fell the same day and the equal-weight version closed lower.

An index is weighted by market value, so size does the talking. A $2.83 trillion company rising 4.98% is enough on its own to lift the Nasdaq, and that is a different thing from everything going up. To tell "a few big ones" from "everything", the equal-weight index and the advancing count are the two numbers to read; take a weighted gain for a broad rebound and you will misjudge your own holdings in a session like this one.

2. Stock in Focus: Amazon +4.98%, 4.6 Times the Runner-Up

Unit: %. These six are grouped by hand as large technology platforms and cloud rather than by the industry field, which reads "specialty retail"; the set spans positive and negative, so a zero line is drawn and all six share one scale. Amazon sits at one end on +4.98% and Meta at the other on −0.55%, 5.53 points apart, with the six averaging +1.21% on four risers and two fallers. No sector average is available for this session, so the basis stops at the comparison set: this was the biggest gain of the six.

What moved it is expectation, not results. A large investment bank made Amazon a top pick and lifted its AWS revenue growth estimates for 2027 and 2028 from 41% and 37% to 47% and 42%; the stock closed at $262.45, adding about $134B to a $2.83 trillion company in one day, on volume 1.25 times its daily average. Hold two things alongside that: the upgrade is built on the second-quarter base and the detailed AWS third-quarter figures come only with the results after the close on October 29; and Amazon did not report that day, so what rose was expectation rather than results, which is equally true of Micron, up 2.97% the same session. The supporting name is Western Digital (WDC), up 6.09% to $352.21, after the PHLX Semiconductor index had fallen for seven sessions running and memory and drives bounced hardest.

Five Dimensions: Peer Rank a Full 100, Volatility Weakest at 62

Unit: 0 to 100, against peers and its own one-year history, measured over a one-year window rather than the single session. Peer rank scores the full 100, valuation heat reads 86, trend position 73, relative strength 64, and the weakest, volatility, reads 62.

Peer rank at 100 measures where it stands among its peers, while valuation heat at 86 measures how hot the sector is right now: different reference sets, so both hold at once. The dimension worth pausing on is the weakest one. Volatility reads only 62, and the stock moved 4.98% in a single session, which is precisely what that dimension is describing. Strongest among peers, in a sector running hot, and still moving a good deal on its own: read those three together and you get closer to the picture than "a perfect peer rank" alone.

3. What to Watch Tonight: SpaceX Reports After the Close

  • 12:30|September housing starts An hour before the 13:30 open; no Fed speakers today
  • After 20:00|SpaceX (SPCX) reports after the close Webcast at 20:30; Netflix (NFLX) reports the same evening
  • Pre-open|VICR Vicor, GE and GM
  • The week's macro focus is the October 27 and 28 FOMC The Fed is already in its pre-meeting blackout, so no official will give direction this week and pricing rests on earnings alone
  • Background on SPCX It listed on June 12 this year and this is its second quarterly report; the stock fell after hours on the last one, and what the market questioned was not revenue but the money going into AI

Unit: %, growth of each business line in 2026Q2 against 2025Q2; the set spans positive and negative, so a zero line is drawn and all six share one scale. AI solutions and infrastructure reads +605%, enterprise and government connectivity +108%, Starlink consumer subscriptions +44%, launch services +32%, launch and development +23%, and advertising −14%.
  • Growth no longer comes from rockets AI solutions and infrastructure went from $311M to $2.19B, and that line alone supplied half of the total revenue increase; launch services at +32% looks respectable, but total launches fell to 38 from 46 a year earlier
  • Put the cost on the same chart as the growth Revenue was $7.81B last quarter, up 92%, while capital spending in the same quarter was $18.4B, or 2.35 times revenue against 0.69 a year ago, with 86% of it going to AI; the net loss of $541M actually narrowed, so what weakened the stock after hours was that multiple
  • The first number to check tonight The AI share of revenue: $2.56B last quarter, or 33%, against 18% a year earlier. Keep that climbing and the transition story holds; let it stall and the valuation loses a support
  • The second number Whether the capital spending multiple widens again. The company gives no guidance, and the $60B purchase of Cursor is expected to close this quarter, so watch how it is consolidated

4. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: The Nasdaq rose 1.11%. Why is this not a broad advance?
A: Because what rose was the weighting, not the count. The Dow closed down 0.07% the same day, about two thirds of S&P 500 members fell, and the equal-weight version closed lower. An index is weighted by market value, so a $2.83 trillion company rising 4.98% is enough on its own to lift the Nasdaq. To tell "a few big ones" from "everything", read the equal-weight index and the advancing count.

Q: Amazon rose 4.98%. Was that a move at the head of its sector?
A: The basis stops at the comparison set, because no sector average is available for this session. What can be said is that it rose most of the six, 4.6 times the runner-up, on four risers and two fallers across a span of 5.53 points. The reason is an upgrade to AWS growth estimates, and the company did not report that day, so what rose was expectation rather than results.

Q: SpaceX revenue rose 92% last quarter. Why did the stock fall after hours on that report?
A: Because the cost stood out more than the growth. Capital spending in the same quarter was $18.4B, or 2.35 times revenue, against 0.69 a year earlier, and $15.83B of the $18.4B went to AI, 86% of the total. The net loss of $541M actually narrowed, so what the market questioned was not the loss but a return on that spending that has yet to be demonstrated. Tonight, start with whether the AI share of revenue climbs above 33%.

XRP Ledger Vulnerability: Could It Have Minted XRP?

A critical XRP Ledger vulnerability that had remained in the payment engine for roughly a decade could theoretically have allowed an attacker to create spendable XRP beyond the ledger’s intended supply rules. XRPL disclosed the issue on October 9, 2026, after it was privately reported through the XRPL Bug Bounty Program on September 22. The vulnerability affected xrpld 3.4.0 and earlier versions and was fixed in xrpld 3.4.1, released on September 25
