Pre-Market Briefing on Oct 21: Western Digital Rose 3.44% as Spot Drive Prices Ran 2 to 5 Times Contract; Tesla Reports Tonight

1. Today's Market: Money Moved From Technology to Health Care and Real Estate

Unit: %, single-day change on October 20; the set spans positive and negative, so a zero line is drawn and all three share one scale. The Dow reads +1.02%, the S&P 500 +0.28% and the Nasdaq −0.02%.

The three indexes went three ways: the Dow up 1.02%, the S&P 500 up 0.28%, and the Nasdaq close to flat at −0.02%. The sectors tell it more clearly, because money went to health care at +2.37% and real estate at +1.70% while technology was the only large sector to fall, at −0.28%.

When the indexes split, the sectors are worth more than the levels. Health care rose 2.37% and technology fell 0.28% on the same day, a spread of 2.65 points that is wider than any single index moved. The Dow carries more health care and industrials and less technology, the Nasdaq the reverse, so the two can part company on one session. To tell a broad advance from a rotation, read which sectors rose and which fell first, then go back to the index.

2. Stock in Focus: Western Digital +3.44%, 0.93 Points Ahead of Its Sector

Unit: %. These six are grouped by hand as the storage chain and span two links, drives and equipment, rather than an automatic peer list from the industry field; the set spans positive and negative, so a zero line is drawn and all six share one scale. Western Digital sits at one end on +3.44% and Lam Research at the other on −3.21%, 6.65 points apart. 🔴 Three up and three down does not mean the sector is splitting: computer hardware averaged a 2.51% gain that day, and half this set fell because the six belong to two different links of the chain.

What moved it is price, not capacity. A broker note put spot hard-drive deals at two to five times contract prices and the 2027 to 2028 supply gap near 400 exabytes; drives are Western Digital's main business, so that gap lands directly in its revenue. The stock closed at $364.32, adding about $4.5B to a $136.4B company in one day, on volume of 8.34M shares that was close to its daily average, so the move was not volume-driven. ⚠️ The detailed quarterly figures come later, and what the same note cut that day was the valuation multiple, not the earnings estimate. Three names on the same chain fell: Micron at −0.98%, Applied Materials at −1.97% and Lam Research at −3.21%. A shortage pays the drive makers first; the equipment makers wait for the expansion orders that follow. The supporting name is CoreWeave (CRWV), up 1.65% on volume 2.8 times its average, a company that rents out GPU compute and turned higher after losing a quarter of its value the week before.

Five Dimensions: Peer Rank a Full 100, Volatility Weakest at 33

Unit: 0 to 100, against peers and its own one-year history, measured over a one-year window rather than the single session. Peer rank scores the full 100, valuation heat reads 65, relative strength 55, trend position 36, and the weakest, volatility, reads 33.

Peer rank at 100 measures where it stands among its peers, while trend position at 36 measures where it stands in its own one-year range: different reference sets, so "strongest among peers" and "still low in its own range" hold at once. That is the pair worth pausing on. A stock that scores full marks against its peers is still in the lower part of its own year, volatility reads only 33, and it moved 3.44% in a single session. Read those three together and you get closer to the picture than a perfect peer rank alone.

3. What to Watch Tonight: Tesla Reports After the Close

  • Pre-open|AT&T (T)
  • After 20:00|Tesla (TSLA) reports after the close Q&A call at 21:30; Meta, IBM and Lam Research report the same evening
  • No US economic data tonight The Fed is already in its pre-meeting blackout, so no official will give direction this week
  • The week's macro focus comes later The October meeting runs on the 27th and 28th, and the October manufacturing and services PMI flash readings arrive on Friday the 23rd
  • Tonight is not about deliveries Last quarter's 486,532 deliveries and 13.7 GWh of storage were published in early October, so there is nothing new to learn there
Unit: billions of dollars, quarterly capital spending as disclosed in the company's results and taken from the financial summary of each quarter's investor deck; all four bars are drawn from zero on one shared scale. 25Q3 reads $2.25B, 25Q4 $2.39B, 26Q1 $2.49B and 26Q2 $5.79B.

  • Three quarters on one line, then a step up $2.25B, $2.39B and $2.49B ran flat before last quarter jumped to $5.79B, 2.3 times the quarter before
  • The money is not spent yet The first half came to $8.28B, and ⚠️ the full-year figure above $25B is company guidance rather than a result; on that basis the second half still needs more than $16.7B, a quarterly average above $8.3B and another 44% above last quarter
  • The cost already shows in the cash Free cash flow in the same quarter turned to −$1.09B, the first negative reading since early 2024, and the company is arranging a debt facility of up to $30B

  • The first set to check tonight is margin Operating margin was 1.4% last quarter against 4.1% a year earlier and 4.2% the quarter before that, so the question is whether it turns or keeps giving way to tariffs, price cuts and depreciation
  • The second set is what the spending bought Revenue rose 26% last quarter, but storage deployments rose 41% while energy revenue rose only 13%, so each GWh brought back about a fifth less than a year ago. Volume rising, price falling and spending doubling, all in one quarter, is the group to watch

4. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Three of the six names fell. Does that mean the hardware sector is splitting?
A: No. Computer hardware averaged a 2.51% gain that day, so the sector as a whole rose. Half this set fell because the six span two links of the storage chain: on the drive side Western Digital rose 3.44%, Seagate 2.17% and Dell 1.53%, while on the equipment and memory side Micron fell 0.98%, Applied Materials 1.97% and Lam Research 3.21%. That is the order in which one chain moves, not the sector coming apart.

Q: Western Digital scores a full 100 on peer rank. Why is trend position only 36?
A: Because the two scores measure different things. Peer rank measures where it sits among its peers; trend position measures where it sits in its own one-year price range. A stock can be the strongest of its peers while its own price is still in the lower part of its year, because the first is a comparison across names and the second a comparison across time. Add volatility at 33 and the reading is: strongest among peers, still low in its own range, and moving a good deal.

Q: Tesla revenue rose 26% last quarter. Why watch capital spending?
A: Because the cost of that growth already shows in the cash. Capital spending in the same quarter was $5.79B, 2.3 times the quarter before, and free cash flow turned to −$1.09B, the first negative reading since early 2024. The sharper comparison is this: storage deployments rose 41% while energy revenue rose only 13%, so each GWh brought back about a fifth less than a year ago. Start tonight with whether operating margin climbs back above 1.4%.
