The pressure came below the gross profit line: operating expenses rose 39%, driven largely by R&D of $2.76 billion, up from $1.63 billion a year earlier.
Lower regulatory credit revenue also weighed on profit, falling about 73% year over year.
GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders was $787 million, which included a $142 million pre-tax unrealized loss on Tesla's SpaceX equity investment and a $288 million pre-tax unrealized gain on digital assets.

Cybercab began carrying passengers in Austin on September 3, and Tesla says its cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles grew eightfold quarter over quarter to nearly two million.
Optimus production has begun on high-volume lines in Fremont, and a dedicated Optimus facility is under construction in Texas.
On the call, CEO Elon Musk said reaching a rate of 20,000 Optimus units a week will take "at least a year, maybe a little longer."
Tesla Semi has started volume production in Nevada, and the company plans to reach 400 MW of training compute by year-end.
Tesla says it is focused on maximum capacity utilization at its factories, with battery availability still limiting vehicle volume.
