Zcash NU7 Upgrade on November 5: What Changes, the Sprout Deadline and the ZEC Price Outlook

Key Takeaways

  • Zcash's NU7 network upgrade is set to activate at block 3,543,405, targeted for around November 5, 2026.
  • NU7 cuts the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, making payments confirm about three times faster.
  • It also introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism, which removes 60% of transaction fees from circulation, and disables version 4 transactions.
  • About 22,309 ZEC still held in the old Sprout shielded pool will become unspendable after activation unless holders move them first.
  • ZEC trades near $1,269 ahead of the upgrade, well below its September peak near $1,699, with analysts split between a breakout and a "sell the news" pullback.
Zcash is about to get its biggest upgrade in years. NU7, short for Network Upgrade 7, is scheduled to go live at block 3,543,405, which the network is expected to reach around November 5, 2026. The upgrade will make Zcash blocks three times faster, change how fees work and close off the network's original privacy pool for good.
The timing has put ZEC back in the spotlight. Privacy coins have been one of the few bright spots in a weak market this autumn, and traders are now watching whether the upgrade sparks a new rally or a classic "sell the news" reaction. Here is what NU7 changes, what holders need to do before activation and what it could mean for the ZEC price.

What Is the Zcash NU7 Upgrade?

NU7 is a network-wide upgrade, also called a hard fork, that changes Zcash's consensus rules. Developers set the activation height at block 3,543,405, and a proposal adding it was merged on October 21. Because activation depends on the network reaching that block, there is no fixed hour, but the target date is November 5.
NU7 has already been tested. It activated on the Zcash testnet at block 4,465,026 on October 4. On October 22, the Zcash Foundation released Zebra 7.0.0, the node software that supports the upgrade. Node operators must upgrade before the activation block. Nodes that do not upgrade can stay online but will follow a pre-upgrade branch of the chain.

What Changes With NU7?

1. Three Times Faster Blocks

The headline change is speed. NU7 cuts the target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. For users, that means faster payments. A standard three-confirmation deposit on an exchange drops from about four minutes to about 75 seconds.
To keep the supply schedule intact, rewards per block fall in proportion, so Zcash keeps its 21 million ZEC supply cap and its existing halving schedule.

2. The Network Sustainability Mechanism

NU7 introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM). Under NSM, 60% of transaction fees are removed from circulation and set aside in the NSM balance, while the rest goes to miners. NU7 also sets mainnet reissuance at block 8,939,664.

3. Version 4 Transactions Retired

NU7 invalidates version 4 transactions under ZIP 2003. Version 5 and version 6 transactions remain valid. Most users will not notice this change, but it has a major side effect for one group of holders, explained below.

The Sprout Deadline: What ZEC Holders Must Do

Sprout was Zcash's original shielded pool, launched in 2016. It was replaced by Sapling in 2018 and by Orchard in 2022, and new deposits into Sprout stopped years ago. Moving funds out of Sprout requires version 4 transactions, which NU7 disables.
That means any ZEC still in the Sprout pool will become unspendable after NU7 activates, even for holders who have their keys. The coins will not be burned and will remain part of the issued supply. As of October 17, about 22,309 ZEC sat in Sprout, worth roughly $28 million at current prices. No mechanism to restore these funds has been scheduled, although ZIP 2003 leaves room for one in the future.
Who is affected: Only users holding ZEC in old Sprout shielded addresses. Exchange balances, transparent addresses and funds in the Sapling and Orchard pools are not affected.
What to do: If you have an old Zcash wallet from the early years, check it now and move any Sprout funds into a newer pool before activation. Tools such as the Argos migration tool can sweep Sprout funds into Sapling.

ZEC Price Outlook Ahead of NU7

Where ZEC Stands

ZEC traded near $1,269 on November 2, up about 2.3% on the day and consolidating between $1,250 and $1,260. It has been one of the year's standout performers. ZEC climbed from roughly $500 in August to a peak near $1,699 in late September, then pulled back toward $1,100 to $1,200 in October. It rose about 7.5% in the week to October 25 while most major cryptocurrencies fell.
Institutional interest is growing. ZEC investment products took in about $41 million over the week to late October, ending three weeks of outflows, and the Winklevoss twins filed for a spot Zcash ETF under the ticker WINK on October 6.

Bullish Case

Some analysts see an ascending triangle forming from the $1,050 lows. Trader Ardi said he would close his short and turn long on a break above $1,370, which could open a move toward $1,500 to $1,700. Faster blocks, the NSM and potential ETF demand give bulls a narrative to build on after the upgrade.

Bearish Case: Sell the News

Others warn that the upgrade may already be priced in. Analyst Crypto Patel argues that ZEC's huge rally reflected a completed "buy the rumor" trade and warned of a possible 50% to 70% correction, a view he says holds unless ZEC makes a confirmed new high above $1,699. CryptoNewsZ also pointed to a head-and-shoulders pattern, with a break below the $1,150 neckline opening targets near $871 and $750.
Derivatives add to the risk. ZEC futures open interest has been near $2.25 billion, with futures volume around 15 times spot volume, according to Airdrop Alert. Heavy leverage can make moves around the upgrade sharper in both directions.

How to Trade ZEC Around the NU7 Upgrade on MEXC

Expect volatility around activation: Upgrades often bring sharp moves both before and after the event.
Watch the $1,370 and $1,150 levels: A break above $1,370 would support the bullish case, while a close below $1,150 would favor the bearish one.
Mind the leverage: With futures volume far above spot volume, liquidations can amplify moves. Use MEXC's TP/SL tools to set exits in advance.
Check deposit notices: Exchanges sometimes pause deposits and withdrawals briefly during network upgrades. Follow MEXC announcements for any ZEC service updates.

Conclusion: A Major Upgrade With Two-Way Price Risk

NU7 is one of the most important upgrades in Zcash's history. Faster blocks, a new fee mechanism and the retirement of the old Sprout pool will change how the network works, and anyone with ZEC still in Sprout has only days left to move it.
For traders, the upgrade is a clear catalyst, but not a one-way bet. ZEC has already rallied more than twofold since August, and heavy leverage means the reaction could be sharp in either direction. Watch the $1,150 and $1,370 levels, follow official announcements and manage risk carefully around activation.
