Nous Research Hermes Agent: Open-Source AI With Built-In Self-Improvement Loop

The MIT-licensed framework launched in February 2026 and collected 22,000 GitHub stars and 242 contributors within weeks. That pace reflects a specific appetite in the open-source AI community. People want agents that remember, adapt, and get better without requiring constant manual instruction.

Hermes Agent is built around what Nous Research calls a closed learning loop. When the agent solves a task, it writes a reusable Markdown skill file, stores the outcome in persistent memory, and adjusts its approach for next time. No YAML. No manual configuration. The system handles it internally using SQLite full-text search and large language model (LLM) summarization.

Openclaw, the breakout AI agent framework that went viral in early 2026 with hundreds of thousands of Github stars, runs on a different logic. It connects LLMs to existing chat apps (Whatsapp, Telegram, Slack, Signal, Discord, iMessage) and executes real-world actions: email management, browser automation, shell commands, and cron tasks.

It is fast, broad, and community-driven. Its Clawhub skill marketplace is large. Its limitation, as users noted publicly, is that memory between sessions requires manual setup. Hermes was built to solve that gap.

Its persistent memory spans sessions, platforms, and devices. It scans for prompt injection. It builds a user profile over time. Give it a research task once, and it completes it, converts the process into a skill, and runs faster the next time it encounters a similar problem.

The installation is a single command. The migration path from Openclaw is built in: hermes claw migrate pulls skills, memories, and settings from an existing Openclaw setup. The switching cost is low. Many users have taken it.

Hermes supports over 200 models through Nous Portal, Openrouter, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and local Ollama. It includes 40-plus built-in tools covering terminal access, file operations, browser automation, code execution, image generation, and natural language scheduling. It runs on a $5 VPS, locally, in Docker, or via SSH.

Nous Research built it. The lab, run by co-founder and CEO Jeffrey Quesnelle, focuses on open-source model development and reinforcement learning. Quesnelle has demonstrated the agent completing a 79,000-word novel autonomously across iterative sessions. The project’s Discord is active. The skill hub at agentskills.io is growing.

Safety was addressed directly in v0.5, which Nous Research called a hardening release. It included more than 200 pull requests, patched a LiteLLM credential exposure issue, added path traversal fixes, and improved container security. Built-in safeguards include command approval flows, dangerous-pattern blocking, and memory scanning for injections. No widespread breach reports exist in the public record.

Community consensus on Reddit, Youtube, and X is not that Hermes replaces Openclaw. Most users call them complementary. Openclaw handles multi-channel operations, team workflows, and ecosystem depth. Hermes handles the learning layer: persistent memory, auto-generated skills, model reasoning, and long-horizon tasks. A common setup runs Hermes as high-level planner on top of Openclaw tools.

Quesnelle and contributors are still shipping. Hermes v0.6.0 shipped in late March 2026 with MCP support and typed SDK workflows. The repos move fast. For anyone already running Openclaw, the migration takes minutes. What happens after that depends on how much you use it. The learning loop compounds. That is the point.
