TLDR

  • Aptos launched Confidential APT on its mainnet after a near-unanimous governance vote approved the proposal.
  • Confidential APT uses zero-knowledge proofs to conceal balances and transfer amounts while keeping transactions verifiable.
  • The token remains pegged one-to-one with APT and operates directly on the Aptos blockchain.
  • Auditor keys can be activated through onchain governance to support investigations and compliance requirements.
  • Aptos says the privacy feature aims to address the trade-off between user privacy and regulatory transparency.

Aptos Labs launched Confidential APT on its mainnet after a near-unanimous governance vote approved the upgrade. The privacy-focused token uses zero-knowledge proofs to conceal balances and transfer amounts while keeping transactions verifiable. Aptos says the feature addresses the long-standing trade-off between privacy protection and regulatory transparency.

Aptos Introduces Confidential APT to Balance Privacy and Compliance

Aptos confirmed that Confidential APT launched on Friday following approval from its onchain governance process. The token remains pegged 1:1 to APT and operates directly on the Aptos mainnet. The network integrates zero-knowledge proofs to hide token balances and transfer values while still validating transactions publicly.

Sherry Xiao, a founding engineer at Aptos Labs, said the update aims to reduce privacy risks.

Aptos stated that wallet addresses and transaction confirmations will remain visible onchain. However, the system conceals the amounts transferred and balances held by users. As a result, the design differs from privacy coins such as Monero, which obscure broader transaction data.

Xiao said the network still enables compliance checks when required. She explained that authorized auditor keys can access and transfer data after a successful governance vote.

Confidential APT Targets Payroll, Treasury, and Enterprise Use Cases

Xiao said Confidential Aptos also addresses operational challenges for businesses using blockchain systems. She said that visible onchain payroll data is visible to everyone. “If a company runs payroll on-chain with visible amounts, every employee’s salary is permanently public to coworkers, competitors, recruiters, everyone,” she said.

She also cited treasury movements, settlement flows, and trading strategies as sensitive information. According to Xiao, companies often view public blockchain data as an operational dealbreaker. She said, “Same with treasury moves, settlement flows, trading strategies,” to describe enterprise concerns.

Confidential APT aims to conceal those figures while preserving audit capabilities. The governance framework controls auditor key activation through onchain voting. Therefore, the system maintains transparency mechanisms while defaulting to privacy for daily use.

Xiao said individuals may adopt Confidential APT faster than corporate users. She explained that enterprises must adjust tax reporting and compliance processes before full integration. However, she said sustained mainnet performance could accelerate business adoption.
