GitHub Copilot Plans Overhauled: New Max Tier Launches

GitHub updates Copilot individual plans with flex allotments, usage-based billing, and a high-volume Max plan starting June 1, 2026.

GitHub Copilot Plans Overhauled: New Max Tier Launches

Starting June 1, 2026, GitHub will introduce significant changes to its Copilot individual plans, transitioning to usage-based billing and adding a new high-tier option called the Max plan. These updates aim to address user concerns about included usage limits amid increasing demand for advanced AI features.

The revamped Copilot offerings will include four tiers: Free, Pro, Pro+, and the newly unveiled Max. While the Free plan remains limited to basic code completions and fewer monthly credits, the paid tiers are getting expanded usage through "flex allotments." This variable component supplements fixed base credits, allowing users to handle more demanding workloads.

Pricing and Benefits

Here's how the paid plans stack up as of June 1:

Plan Monthly Price Base Credits Flex Allotment Total Usage
Pro $10 $10 $5 $15
Pro+ $39 $39 $31 $70
Max $100 $100 $100 $200

The new Max plan targets developers handling sustained, high-volume AI workloads. With $200 in combined monthly usage credits, it effectively doubles the capacity of Pro+.

How It Works

Base credits are used first, with flex allotments automatically kicking in as needed. Credits apply uniformly across all environments, including GitHub.com, IDEs, and the CLI. For users who exhaust their included usage, additional credits can be purchased to keep projects moving. Notably, code completions and next-edit suggestions remain unlimited on paid plans and do not consume credits.

Why Flex Matters

The flex allotment is designed to adapt to changes in AI model pricing, efficiency improvements, and new capabilities. While flex usage can vary, base credits remain fixed at a 1:1 ratio with subscription costs. This structure ensures greater predictability for basic needs while providing flexibility for power users.

What Users Need to Do

According to GitHub, existing subscribers on Pro and Pro+ plans will automatically receive the updated flex allotments starting June 1. No manual adjustments are required. For more details, users can review GitHub’s documentation on usage-based billing.

These changes come as GitHub Copilot continues to evolve alongside the broader push toward AI-enhanced development tools. The addition of the Max plan signals a clear focus on meeting the needs of developers pushing the limits of AI-driven coding assistance.
