The sixth Asia Summit on Global Health (ASGH) and the 17th Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair concluded successfully, facilitating over 1,000 investment and business matching meetings and signing multiple memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to support healthcare enterprises in going global. The events, held as part of International Healthcare Week, drew about 3,000 participants from 43 countries and regions for the ASGH and about 13,000 buyers from 61 countries for the Medical Fair.

The ASGH, jointly organized by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), and the Medical Fair, organized by HKTDC and co-organized by the Hong Kong MedTech Association, focused heavily on the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Over 90 global leaders, including a Nobel laureate, shared insights on healthcare innovation and AI applications.

During plenary sessions, experts emphasized the need for pandemic preparedness and the commercialization of medical research. Prof Ibrahim Abubakar of University College London stressed that research platforms must be developed long before pandemics, while Jonathan Symonds, Chair of GSK, noted that ageing and chronic disease are now economic problems, not just health system issues. Prof Michael Levitt, a 2013 Nobel laureate, highlighted Hong Kong’s unique advantages in healthcare data for research.

AI was a central theme, with sessions such as ‘Intelligence at Scale: How AI is Powering Real-World Healthcare Revolution’ and ‘Transforming Healthcare through Digital Health & AI Innovations.’ Natasha Chhatrapati of Pfizer said AI is compressing timelines across the healthcare journey, from drug development to patient care.

The fair also featured a Silver Health Chapter addressing population ageing, and a new session on chief scientific officer insights. Dr Li Xiang of Fosun Pharma emphasized the importance of starting with the end in mind in drug discovery.

Beyond thought leadership, the ASGH facilitated over 400 one-on-one deal-making meetings, attracting investors and healthcare enterprises from Europe, the US, Asia, and the Greater Bay Area. The ASGH Business Hub and InnoHealth Showcase featured 180 healthcare innovation companies.

Ten MoUs were signed, including between HKSH Medical Group and Siemens Healthineers, establishing HKSH as Siemens Healthineers’ first Photon Counting Computed Tomography Simulation Reference Site in Asia. Heidi Health, an Australian AI platform, signed agreements with EC Healthcare and Hong Kong Metropolitan University.

The GoGlobal CONNECT series workshop provided guidance on international expansion, with Prof Bernard Cheung noting Hong Kong’s 30-year electronic medical records as a unique asset. HKTDC also signed an MoU with the Hong Kong Singapore Business Association to support Mainland enterprises going global via Hong Kong to target ASEAN markets.

The Medical Fair, with 300 exhibitors from 10 countries, focused on MedTech, GeronTech, and preventive healthcare. Exhibitors showcased AI-integrated solutions, and business matching led to deals such as Dresio Limited’s MoU with a Filipino buyer expected to exceed HK$1 million.

Exhibitors and buyers praised the events for fostering collaborations. GenomeMe Lab from Canada identified partners from Hong Kong, Thailand, and India. Dr Keo Sovann from Cambodia’s Orchid Hospital expressed interest in AI-powered medical imaging. The events also attracted buyers from Morocco and other emerging markets.

The concurrent Hospital Authority Convention further strengthened synergy. The EXHIBITION+ hybrid model extended networking opportunities via Click2Match until May 20.
