Anthropic’s Mythos Successor Is Ready, But Washington Still Holds The Switch

Anthropic has reportedly finished training a more capable successor to Mythos 5, just 9 days after U.S. export controls forced the model offline worldwide.

Key Points:

Mythos Successor Emerges From Training

AI watcher Andrew Curran said a stronger system had emerged from training. He could not confirm its name or whether the company would ship it at all.

The model might arrive as Mythos 5.1 or Mythos 6, or stay internal to speed further work.

Anthropic released Mythos 5 and Fable 5 on Jun. 9, then lost both three days later to a directive issued under a 2018 national security statute. Fable 5 ships with heavy safeguards for public use, while Mythos 5 runs with fewer limits through Project Glasswing. The firm says about 50 partners have used early Mythos models to find more than 10,000 high or critical software flaws.

Export Controls Fail To Halt Progress

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent the directive to Anthropic chief Dario Amodei on Jun. 12, citing national security. The order barred every foreign national, including the company's own foreign-born staff, so it disabled both models for everyone.

The government flagged a method for bypassing Fable 5's safeguards. Anthropic reviewed the demonstration and called it narrow. It warned that the same standard, applied across the field, would freeze new model launches industrywide.

Curran argued the embargo does little to slow development, citing open-weights rivals such as Z.ai's GLM-5.2 that rival far larger closed models at a fraction of the cost.

The suspension followed a reported warning from Amazon, a backer of up to 25 billion dollars that reportedly told officials its researchers had surfaced attack-ready information. It later drew remarks from Donald Trump and a public defense from Amodei, who is still pressing to reverse the controls.

UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach

The post UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. British crypto holders may soon face a very different landscape as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) moves to expand its regulatory reach in the industry. A new consultation paper outlines how the watchdog intends to apply its rulebook to crypto firms, shaping everything from asset safeguarding to trading platform operation. According to the financial regulator, these proposals would translate into clearer protections for retail investors and stricter oversight of crypto firms. UK FCA plans Until now, UK crypto users mostly encountered the FCA through rules on promotions and anti-money laundering checks. The consultation paper goes much further. It proposes direct oversight of stablecoin issuers, custodians, and crypto-asset trading platforms (CATPs). For investors, that means the wallets, exchanges, and coins they rely on could soon be subject to the same governance and resilience standards as traditional financial institutions. The regulator has also clarified that firms need official authorization before serving customers. This condition should, in theory, reduce the risk of sudden platform failures or unclear accountability. David Geale, the FCA’s executive director of payments and digital finance, said the proposals are designed to strike a balance between innovation and protection. He explained: “We want to develop a sustainable and competitive crypto sector – balancing innovation, market integrity and trust.” Geale noted that while the rules will not eliminate investment risks, they will create consistent standards, helping consumers understand what to expect from registered firms. Why does this matter for crypto holders? The UK regulatory framework shift would provide safer custody of assets, better disclosure of risks, and clearer recourse if something goes wrong. However, the regulator was also frank in its submission, arguing that no rulebook can eliminate the volatility or inherent risks of holding digital assets. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that when consumers choose to invest, they do…
