TLDR

  • IBM unveils Quantum Nighthawk processor with 120 qubits and 218 tunable couplers, designed to achieve quantum advantage by end of 2026
  • Nighthawk delivers 30% more circuit complexity than previous IBM Quantum Heron processor, supporting up to 5,000 two-qubit gates
  • IBM introduces Quantum Loon experimental processor demonstrating all hardware elements needed for fault-tolerant quantum computing by 2029
  • Company shifts quantum chip production to 300mm wafer facility, doubling development speed and increasing chip complexity by 10 times
  • IBM stock rises 2.4% in premarket trading to $321.36, extending year-to-date gains to 22.7%

IBM stock climbed 2.4% to $321.36 in premarket trading after the company announced its latest quantum computing hardware at the annual Quantum Developer Conference. The tech giant unveiled two new processors that mark steps toward practical quantum computing applications.

The centerpiece is IBM Quantum Nighthawk, which the company calls its most advanced quantum processor to date. Nighthawk features 120 qubits connected through 218 next-generation tunable couplers arranged in a square lattice pattern.

The new architecture represents a 20% increase in couplers compared to IBM’s previous Quantum Heron processor. This expanded connectivity allows users to run circuits with 30% more complexity while keeping error rates low.

Nighthawk can handle up to 5,000 two-qubit gates, the basic building blocks of quantum calculations. IBM plans to deliver Nighthawk to users by the end of 2025.

The company has set targets for future versions to reach 7,500 gates by late 2026 and 10,000 gates in 2027. By 2028, Nighthawk-based systems could support up to 15,000 two-qubit gates using 1,000 or more connected qubits.

IBM expects to achieve quantum advantage by the end of 2026. That’s the point where quantum computers can solve certain problems better than traditional computers using any method.

The company launched a community-led tracking system to verify quantum advantage claims. IBM contributed three experiments to the tracker alongside partners Algorithmiq, researchers at the Flatiron Institute, and BlueQubit.

Software and Error Correction Progress

IBM announced new capabilities in Qiskit, its quantum software platform. The updates include dynamic circuit features that boost accuracy by 24% at scales of 100 qubits or more.

New error mitigation tools powered by high-performance classical computers reduce the cost of getting accurate results by more than 100 times. IBM plans to add computational libraries for machine learning and optimization by 2027.

The company also revealed progress on quantum error correction. IBM achieved real-time error decoding in less than 480 nanoseconds using qLDPC codes, completing this milestone one year ahead of schedule.

Fault-Tolerant Computing Development

IBM introduced Quantum Loon, an experimental processor that demonstrates all key components needed for fault-tolerant quantum computing. The chip validates a new architecture for implementing quantum error correction at scale.

Loon incorporates routing layers that create longer on-chip connections between distant qubits. It also includes technology to reset qubits between calculations.

IBM aims to build the first large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.

Manufacturing Expansion

IBM moved its primary quantum processor production to a 300mm wafer fabrication facility at the Albany NanoTech Complex in New York. The advanced facility has doubled IBM’s development speed by cutting processor build time in half.

The shift increased the physical complexity of IBM’s quantum chips by 10 times. The facility allows multiple chip designs to be researched at the same time.

IBM stock has gained 22.7% year-to-date through the previous close. The company outlined its quantum computing roadmap with specific hardware targets extending through 2028.

The post Fan Token Firm Chiliz Acquires 2-Time ‘Dota 2’ Champions, OG Esports appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. In brief The Chiliz Group has acquired a controlling stake in OG Esports, a prominent competitive gaming organization. OG Esports unveiled its own fan token on Chiliz’s Socios.com platform back in 2020. It recently hit an all-time high price. Chiliz has teased various future team-related benefits for OG token holders, along with a new Web3-related project. The Chiliz Group, which operates the Socios.com crypto fan token platform, announced Tuesday that it has acquired a 51% controlling stake in OG Esports, the competitive gaming organization founded in 2015 by Dota 2 legends Johan “nOtail” Sundstein and Sébastien “Ceb” Debs. OG made history as the first team to win consecutive titles at The International—the annual, high-profile Dota 2 world championship tournament—in 2018 and 2019, and has since expanded into multiple games including Counter-Strike, Honor of Kings, and Marvel Rivals. The team was also the first esports organization to join the Socios platform with the 2020 debut of its own fan token, which Chiliz said recently became the first esports team token to exceed a $100 million market capitalization. OG was recently priced at $16.88, up nearly 9% on the day following the announcement. The token’s price peaked at a new all-time high of $24.78 last week ahead of The International 2025, where OG did not compete this year. Following the acquisition, Xavier Oswald will assume the CEO role, while the co-founders will turn their attention to “a new strategic project consolidating the team’s competitive foundation [and] driving innovation at the intersection of esports and Web3,” per a press release. No further details were provided regarding that project. “Bringing OG into the Chiliz Group is a major step toward further strengthening fan experiences, one where the community doesn’t just watch from the sidelines but gets to shape the journey,” Chiliz CEO Alex Dreyfus…
