YouTube Recap: Your Year, Made by You

In the spirit of end-of-year summaries like our favourite Spotify Wrapped, YouTube launched its video Recap feature on Tuesday. While the platform has long provided an annual recap for its music section, this new recap focuses specifically on the content users consumed on the main YouTube service.

According to the platform, the recap was in response to high user demand and, after extensive concept testing, rolled out a highly personalised experience.

“So, because many of you asked for it, we’re thrilled to announce the first-ever YouTube Recap. YouTube Recap uniquely highlights interests, deep dives, and moments you explored this year, based on your watch history. You’ll get a set of up to 12 different cards that spotlight your top channels, interests, and even the evolution of your viewing habits, or which personality type you fall into based on the videos you loved to watch!” the company said.

However, your eligibility for YouTube Recap depends on several critical requirements regarding your account activity and settings. If you cannot access the feature, it is likely due to one or more specific reasons related to your account’s data history and status.

According to YouTube, a Minimum Watch History is essential for the system to generate a personalised summary. You must have enough eligible viewing history recorded from January through late October 2025. If your watch history was paused for any period, or if you had the auto-delete settings turned on, that data will not count towards your Recap.

Secondly, specific Account Status and Age Requirements apply. You need to be properly signed in to a personal YouTube account, as delegate users on a Brand account are not eligible for the personalised summary.

Furthermore, you must meet the minimum age requirement of 13 years old (or the applicable age in your country). Supervised or child accounts are automatically excluded from the feature.

Finally, while the rollout is expansive, Location and App Status can be factors. Although Recap is available in over 185 countries and 17 languages, being situated outside of these eligible regions will prevent access.

Additionally, users are advised to ensure their YouTube mobile app is updated to the latest version to ensure the Recap banner appears correctly on the homepage or under the “You” tab.

“Nigeria’s creative energy is undeniable, and this year’s lists prove that the nation’s artists and storytellers are creating content that resonates globally. From chart-topping music to must-watch Nollywood dramas, we’re proud that YouTube is the place where this talent can shine. With the new YouTube Recap feature, we’re excited to give every user a fun, personal way to celebrate the videos that made their own year special,” Addy Awofisayo, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, YouTube said.
