Philippines Debuts New Commemorative Coin for ASEAN 2026 Chairmanship

To mark the Philippines’ assumption of the ASEAN chairmanship for 2026, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) plans to release a new 10-piso commemorative coin this January.

The coin retains the standard specifications of the country’s currency. Its obverse side features the portrait of national hero Apolinario Mabini, consistent with the existing 10-piso coin under the New Generation Currency series.

This approach ensures continuity with coins currently in circulation while highlighting the significance of the regional milestone.

Distinctive elements appear on the reverse side, which is dedicated to the Philippines’ leadership of the bloc.

The design centres on the ASEAN 2026 emblem, reflecting themes of unity, cooperation, and shared regional aspirations.

A key feature of the new coin is the inclusion of a scannable QR code on the reverse side.

According to the BSP, this addition allows the public to access verified digital content and official information regarding the Philippines’ hosting of ASEAN activities.

The central bank notes that this feature aims to reinforce transparency and encourage public engagement with the summit’s agenda.

Beyond its function as legal tender, the coin serves as a symbol of the Philippines’ participation in regional economic integration.

Through this design, the BSP aims to highlight the country’s leadership role and the shared goals of ASEAN member states.

The public can use the coin for daily transactions starting January 2026. The central bank wants to ensure that it reaches a wider audience beyond just collectors.
