TLDR

  • UPS opened a $100 million logistics centre in Taoyuan, Taiwan — its largest in Asia Pacific
  • The hub is located near Taiwan’s largest international airport and serves high-tech freight
  • Around 80% of the freight handled at the facility is high-tech
  • Applied Materials (AMAT) will use the site as an Asian distribution centre
  • UPS is considering expanding flights to Kaohsiung, where TSMC is building a new factory

United Parcel Service (UPS) has opened a $100 million logistics centre in Taoyuan, Taiwan, its largest facility in the Asia Pacific region. The hub is designed to serve growing demand from the tech sector, particularly the semiconductor industry that Taiwan is known for.

The Taoyuan site is strategically placed near Taiwan’s largest international airport, making it well-suited for fast-moving, high-value tech cargo. Lauren Zhao, president of UPS Asia Pacific Supply Chain Solutions and Freight Forwarding, told reporters at the opening that roughly 80% of the freight handled there is high-tech.

Applied Materials (AMAT), the largest U.S. semiconductor equipment maker, will use the facility as its Asian distribution centre. AMAT stock was up 3.37% on the day the news broke.

TSMC, the world’s top contract chip-maker, is a key driver of demand in the region. Its chips power much of the AI hardware build-out happening worldwide, making Taiwan a critical node in global supply chains.

UPS Eyes Southern Expansion

Sam Hung, UPS managing director for Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, said the company is also looking at operating flights to Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan. That decision will depend on customer demand.

Kaohsiung is where TSMC is currently constructing a large new factory as part of a growing semiconductor cluster in the south of the island. If that cluster expands as expected, UPS could have reason to extend its footprint there.

The $100 million investment reflects just how much logistics infrastructure is being pulled into orbit around Taiwan’s chip ecosystem. With TSMC at the centre of the AI supply chain, getting equipment and components in and out quickly has become a competitive priority for firms like Applied Materials.

Applied Materials Ties In

Applied Materials using the Taoyuan hub as its Asian base gives UPS an anchor tenant with deep ties to chip manufacturing. AMAT makes the machines that build the chips — so its distribution needs are closely tied to semiconductor production schedules.

The UPS facility positions both companies to respond faster to shifts in chip production demand across the region. That kind of speed matters when equipment delays can halt a fabrication line.

UPS currently operates only out of Taoyuan airport in Taiwan. The Kaohsiung option remains under consideration as of March 25, 2026.
