Ethereum Staking Through a Broker: What Is the Net Return?

Interactive Brokers launched Ethereum staking for eligible clients on October 13, 2026. Its official announcement identifies zerohash as the service provider, with rewards added to the staked cryptocurrency balance. Clients access the service through the broker’s portal, but rewards still originate from network activity.

The launch brings a function associated with crypto services into a multi-asset brokerage environment. ETH holders do not need to operate their own validator to use the service. In exchange, they depend on providers and pay a portion of the rewards generated.

The net result is not necessarily the Ethereum staking figure displayed on a network dashboard. Investors need to account for reward definitions, fees, the time assets are actually active, and withdrawal arrangements. An increase in ETH quantity also does not guarantee an increase in dollar or rupiah value.

“What is the net return?” therefore has two different answers: the additional ETH received after fees, and the change in the value of the entire position after price movements and transaction costs.

Rewards Come From the Network, Not a Fixed Broker Interest Rate

Ethereum uses proof-of-stake. Validators help check and propose blocks, with ETH committed to support that participation. Ethereum’s documentation explains that rewards depend on validator activity and network parameters.

A broker provides convenient access, but does not turn staking into a fixed-interest deposit. Payments can change with network conditions, validator performance, and service terms.

Staking also needs to be distinguished from crypto lending. Staking relates to network consensus, while lending depends on borrowers and loan structures. Both may generate additional assets, but their payment sources and risks differ.

The 30% Fee Applies to Rewards, Not Principal

The Interactive Brokers and Zero Hash agreement supplement, dated September 25, 2026, caps combined fees at 30% of staking rewards. Clients are entitled to at least 70% of rewards falling within the agreement’s definition.

Insert a screenshot of PDF page 8, “12. Fees for Staking Services,” showing the 30% cap and minimum 70% customer share.

The document excludes transaction fees, gas fees, and other non-staking awards from its staking-reward definition. This matters when comparing the service with validator-income metrics combining several revenue sources.

Two yield figures can use the same denominator while including different income components. Before applying a network APR to a product estimate, an investor needs to establish what the metric includes and what the service actually distributes.

Calculating Additional ETH After Fees

Suppose a client stakes 10 ETH and generates product-eligible rewards equal to 4% over one year. Assume the assets remain active throughout the period, no penalties occur, and compounding is excluded.

Gross rewards:

10 ETH × 4% = 0.40 ETH.

At the maximum 30% fee:

0.40 ETH × 30% = 0.12 ETH.

Rewards after fees:

0.40 ETH − 0.12 ETH = 0.28 ETH.

That represents a 2.8% increase in ETH relative to the opening balance. The ending balance is 10.28 ETH before other costs and taxes.

The 4% figure is illustrative, not an actual rate announced by the broker or a forecast for Ethereum. The calculation demonstrates reward allocation.

Adding rewards back to the staked position can increase the subsequent earning base through compounding. The additional effect depends on credit timing, when rewards become productive, and the applicable rate. A simple APR should not be presented as APY without accounting for those processes.

More ETH Can Coexist With an Investment Loss

Token quantity and portfolio value need separate calculations. In the example above, ETH quantity increases by 2.8%. If the ETH price declines by 20% during the same period, the position’s dollar-value change is:

(1 + 2.8%) × (1 − 20%) − 1 = −17.76%.

The investor owns more ETH, but the dollar value is lower. This excludes trading commissions, taxes, penalties, and exchange-rate changes.

For Indonesian readers, rupiah results also depend on currency movements. Dollar appreciation against the rupiah can offset part of an ETH decline in dollars, while rupiah appreciation can work in the opposite direction. That relationship does not make staking an exchange-rate hedge.

Staking rewards are one component of total return, not a substitute for calculating asset-price changes.

Four Risks That a Brokerage Interface Does Not Remove

Broker access can simplify operations. A familiar interface, however, does not eliminate network risks or exposure to the service provider.

A. ETH Price Risk

Rewards are paid in an asset with a variable market value. A few percentage points of additional tokens can be outweighed by the price movement during ownership.

An investor needing a specific cash amount on a particular date faces a different uncertainty from someone measuring results in ETH. Each needs a return measure appropriate to the analysis.

B. Withdrawals May Not Be Immediate

Ethereum’s withdrawal documentation explains that validator exits can involve a queue. Intermediaries also have their own processes for accepting instructions, processing unstaking, and returning balances.

An unstake button is not equivalent to funds immediately available for sale or withdrawal. Processing time should not be treated as fixed without checking network conditions and provider terms.

C. Validator and Penalty Risk

Validators can lose rewards when they fail to perform their duties correctly. Certain violations can lead to slashing, a penalty that reduces ETH and removes the validator from participation.

Ordinary downtime should not be confused with slashable behavior. Clients need to understand the operator, loss allocation, and any contractual protection actually provided. Unguaranteed rewards do not imply protected principal.

D. Custody and Account-Protection Risk

The staking service operates through another provider. Access through a brokerage portal does not give the customer possession of private keys. The contractual division of responsibility matters.

Finance Magnates’ report on the service explains that assets in the Zero Hash account do not receive the SIPC protection applicable to brokerage securities accounts. A unified interface does not mean identical legal protections for every asset.

Comparing Services Without Being Misled by APR

Useful comparisons use after-fee rewards and matching periods. A rate assuming full activation cannot be compared directly with a realized result including time spent in queues.

The relevant items include:

  • The rewards included in the calculation.

  • The fee percentage and whether a displayed rate is already net.

  • Activation time and periods producing no rewards.

  • Crediting and compounding arrangements.

  • Unstaking procedures and subsequent trading access.

  • Purchase, sale, transfer, and currency-conversion costs.

  • Loss allocation following penalties or service disruption.

Self-staking is not automatically cheapest for every user. Running a validator requires capital, equipment, connectivity, security, and technical skills. Service fees pay for some of that work, but the operational benefit still needs to be weighed against the restrictions and risks accepted.

Indonesian Investor Eligibility Requires a Separate Check

The launch announcement refers to eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients. Having a brokerage account does not itself establish staking access, particularly where an account belongs to another entity or jurisdiction.

Indonesian readers need to check residency rules, account entity, service permissions, and the terms presented in their portal. This article does not assume availability for all Indonesian residents.

The relevant return also needs to come from the account’s terms and rewards actually credited. No single permanent net rate can be applied to every client.

Net Results Need to Be Measured in ETH and Money

Broker-based staking offers access convenience, but its outcome depends on product-eligible rewards, fees, active time, withdrawal arrangements, and custody risk.

A hypothetical 4% gross reward with a 30% fee produces a simple 2.8% increase in ETH. That is a calculation, not a promised return. ETH price movements can have a much larger effect on investment value.

The most useful measure is the reward actually received after fees, relative to the balance and time actually active. Investors then still need to calculate total return in the currency used to assess their portfolio.

DeFi Price Manipulation Attacks Hit 43 in 2026

DeFi price manipulation attacks have reached a new reported annual high in 2026, exposing persistent weaknesses in how decentralized financial protocols value assets, manage collateral, and respond to abnormal market conditions. According to DefiLlama data cited by RootData and other industry publications, 43 price manipulation incidents had been recorded by October 21, surpassing the previous full-year high of 27 incidents in 2022. Reported losses associated with the 2026 incidents totaled approximately $199 million, although their distribution reveals a more complex security picture than the headline count suggests
