Mt. Gox Delays Repayments Again. Has Bitcoin Selling Pressure Eased?

Mt. Gox has extended its creditor repayment deadline once again. Rehabilitation Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, with court approval, moved the deadline from October 31, 2026 to October 31, 2027, Japan Standard Time.

The change covers the Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment, and Intermediate Repayment. The trustee said these repayments had largely been completed for creditors who finished the required procedures and encountered no processing issues. The extension was needed because many creditors had not completed the necessary steps, while others faced problems during the repayment process.

For the Bitcoin market, the extension lowers the chance that all unresolved payments must be processed near the end of October 2026. It does not eliminate possible selling pressure. The trustee did not disclose how much BTC remains to be distributed, when individual transfers will occur, or what share of outstanding claims will be settled in Bitcoin rather than cash.

Bitcoin traded at approximately US$80,304.86 on the MEXC Bitcoin market page at 12:34 p.m. WIB on October 29, 2026. Its 24-hour range was US$79,725.33 to US$81,805.94, with a daily change of about negative 0.31%. That movement cannot be attributed to Mt. Gox alone because Bitcoin was also responding to Federal Reserve policy, global liquidity, ETF flows, and leveraged positioning.

What Mt. Gox Actually Extended

The official Mt. Gox notice dated October 16, 2026 moved the deadline for three repayment categories to October 31, 2027, Japan Standard Time. It is a deadline for completing unresolved repayment procedures, not a date on which every remaining creditor will be paid simultaneously.

The notice identifies two broad groups still awaiting payment. Some creditors have not completed the required procedures. Others encountered administrative or processing problems even after taking the necessary steps.

The latest notice does not disclose:

  • The number of creditors still awaiting payment.

  • The amount of BTC and Bitcoin Cash yet to be distributed.

  • The split between crypto and cash repayments.

  • A payment date for each creditor.

  • The amount of BTC that may eventually reach trading platforms.

Those missing figures prevent a reliable estimate of the supply that could enter the market.

A Large Part of the Distribution Has Already Occurred

Mt. Gox repayments did not begin in 2026. The trustee started distributing Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash through designated crypto service providers in July 2024.

An official update dated March 27, 2025 stated that more than 19,500 creditors had received BTC and BCH. The same notice said the trustee was also making cash repayments using proceeds from Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash sales for eligible creditors.

The figure confirms that a substantial portion of the distribution had already reached creditors before the latest extension. It does not reveal how many creditors were still waiting in October 2026 or how much Bitcoin remained under the trustee's control.

The repayment history also shows why Mt. Gox should not be treated as a single liquidation event. Distributions can take place through several service providers, in crypto or cash, and according to the procedural status of each creditor.

Four Variables That Determine Selling Pressure

The extended deadline changes the time available for repayment. The eventual effect on BTC depends more heavily on four other variables.

A. The Amount of Bitcoin Actually Distributed

The relevant figure is the net amount still to be delivered, rather than the total amount historically associated with Mt. Gox. Some assets have already been distributed, and some creditors receive cash proceeds instead of Bitcoin.

Wallet trackers may help identify on-chain transfers, but the ownership and purpose of each address must be verified. A movement between trustee-controlled wallets or a transfer to a custodian does not automatically represent a sale.

B. The Speed of Distribution

A transfer of 1,000 BTC in one day creates a different liquidity event from 1,000 BTC distributed over several weeks. The market has more time to absorb supply when transfers are spread out and spot demand remains available.

The October 2027 deadline gives the trustee more time to resolve delayed claims. It may reduce the concentration of payments around October 2026, although transfers can still occur at any point before the new deadline.

C. Creditor Decisions After Receiving Assets

Mt. Gox creditors have different cost bases and liquidity needs. Some may sell after waiting more than a decade. Others may retain their BTC, sell only a portion, use over-the-counter transactions, or move the assets to private wallets.

A transfer from the trustee to a repayment provider shows that creditors are gaining access to their assets. Selling pressure appears only when coins are offered to the market and meet the available demand.

D. The Market's Capacity to Absorb Supply

Potential sales need to be compared with order-book depth, genuine spot volume, ETF flows, institutional demand, and global liquidity. A large nominal transfer may have a limited price impact when buyers absorb the supply without a material widening of spreads.

The risk increases when creditor distributions coincide with Bitcoin ETF outflows, futures deleveraging, or a broader deterioration in macro sentiment. Several sources of supply arriving together can produce a larger reaction than an Mt. Gox transfer in isolation.

A Simple Distribution Scenario

The following calculation illustrates why timing matters. The 1,000 BTC figure is hypothetical and does not represent an estimate of the trustee's balance or a forecast of creditor sales.

Using a Bitcoin price of approximately US$80,304.86:

Value of 1,000 BTC = 1,000 × US$80,304.86 = approximately US$80.30 million

If the entire amount entered the market in one day, buyers would need to absorb about US$80.30 million of additional supply during that session. If the same amount were distributed evenly over ten days, the daily average would be:

100 BTC per day × US$80,304.86 = approximately US$8.03 million per day

The example excludes price changes, OTC transactions, creditors who retain their Bitcoin, and new buyers attracted by lower prices. It demonstrates the effect of distribution speed rather than forecasting a market outcome.

What the Extension Changes for Bitcoin

The new deadline reduces the risk that all unresolved payments must be processed before October 31, 2026. A longer window may spread potential supply over a broader period.

Distribution risk remains because creditors can receive funds well before October 2027. The trustee is not required to wait until the final day, and large transfers may occur without extensive advance notice.

Bitcoin's price near US$80,304.86 on October 29 does not establish that the Mt. Gox extension caused its daily movement. A proper assessment requires checking the timing of verified wallet transfers against spot volume, order-book liquidity, and other market catalysts.

Data to Monitor Next

Four data points can help separate administrative transfers from supply that is actually reaching the market:

  • New repayment notices from the rehabilitation trustee.

  • Transfers from wallets verified as belonging to the Mt. Gox estate.

  • BTC deposits to service providers involved in creditor repayments.

  • Changes in spot volume, order-book depth, and spreads when transfers occur.

Bitcoin ETF flows, funding rates, open interest, and futures liquidations should be reviewed over the same period. Bitcoin can decline because of leveraged deleveraging without any Mt. Gox sale, or hold its price during a distribution if spot demand is strong enough.

Has Bitcoin Selling Pressure Eased?

The extension to October 2027 reduces the calendar risk previously concentrated near the end of October 2026. The trustee now has another year to resolve delayed repayments.

Potential supply has not disappeared because payments can occur before the new deadline. The impact can only be assessed after the market sees how much BTC moves, where it goes, how quickly it is distributed, and what creditors do after receiving it.

The official notice clarifies the procedural timeline but does not provide enough information to conclude that Mt. Gox selling pressure has ended. The next verified on-chain transfers and the market's ability to absorb them will be more informative than the deadline alone.

Altcoin Trading Volume Nears 4x BTC—Is Rotation Real?

Altcoin trading volume has surged relative to Bitcoin, with recent spot activity approaching four times BTC spot volume and reaching its strongest relative level since September 2025. The shift is notable because it is occurring alongside broader market participation rather than an obvious surge in leverage. Glassnode reported that 72.5% of the altcoins it tracks outperformed Bitcoin over the latest week, while overall exchange spot volume had more than doubled from its August low. At the same time, altcoin perpetual open interest measured in coins had barely increased over the previous 30 days, suggesting that the latest rotation has been driven more by spot-market participation than by a rapid build-up of leveraged derivatives positions

Hong Kong Solana ETF: Can SOL Follow Bitcoin's Path?

Hong Kong Solana ETF: Can SOL Follow Bitcoin's Path?

Hong Kong is expanding regulated access to Solana with the listing of the Pando Solana ETF on October 13, 2026. The product, trading under stock code 2831 on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, becomes the market’s second spot Solana ETF rather than its first. ChinaAMC launched its own Solana ETF on October 27, 2025, giving investors almost a year of real-world data against which the new product can be judged. That history changes the key question. The launch is no longer simply about whether regulators will permit a Hong Kong Solana ETF. It is about whether a second issuer can deepen liquidity, attract incremental capital and turn regulated SOL exposure into a meaningful institutional allocation channel.
