Ethereum is a transformative blockchain platform built for much more than simple digital transfers. It allows developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) through smart contracts—self-executing programmes that run exactly according to their code. The network’s native currency, Ether (ETH), is used to pay for computational resources. In 2022, Ethereum finalized its shift to proof-of-stake, lowering energy consumption by about 99.95%. Since then, the platform has continued advancing through major upgrades aimed at improving scalability and making the network easier to access.

Ethereum’s development path focuses on improving scalability, security, and sustainability over time. The next major milestone, called the “Surge”, is set to bring proto-danksharding to meaningfully increase transaction throughput and reduce fees. In parallel, Layer 2 scaling solutions are becoming more central—particularly Optimistic Rollups and zkRollups—as they expand capacity while keeping Ethereum’s security guarantees. These Layer 2 systems can process thousands of transactions per second, and the implementation of EIP-4844 (proto-danksharding) is designed to reduce Layer 2 costs by up to 100×. Later upgrade stages—known as the Verge, Purge, and Splurge—will target greater efficiency and improved usability. Planned enhancements include verkle trees to improve data storage, cleanup of historical data, and additional security-focused improvements.

Ethereum was created by Vitalik Buterin, who introduced the idea in 2013 when he was 19 years old. The project officially launched in 2015 with a group of co-founders, including Gavin Wood, who wrote much of the technical specification. Today, development coordination is led by the Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit organisation. The broader ecosystem has expanded to include multiple client teams, research groups, and development organisations. Major contributors include the Ethereum Foundation, Consensys, and many independent development teams. Ethereum continues to operate in a decentralised way, supported by more than 200 active core developers and thousands of contributors worldwide. Regular community calls and the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) process help ensure development remains transparent and collaborative.

Ethereum can be viewed as a global computer that anyone can use, where applications operate across thousands of computers instead of relying on a single machine. This distributed structure makes systems highly dependable and very hard to shut down. Smart contracts execute within the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), a purpose-built environment for running this on-chain code. To keep the network from being overwhelmed and to allocate resources fairly, Ethereum uses a fee mechanism called “gas.” Each operation requires gas, and users pay those costs in Ether. After “The Merge” in September 2022, Ethereum moved from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, cutting energy usage by more than 99.95% and strengthening security and decentralisation. Validators join consensus by staking at least 32 ETH, while smaller holders can still participate through staking pools. The network is supported by more than 500,000 validators that help maintain security and ongoing operation.

Ether (ETH) is Ethereum’s native asset and serves several functions across the ecosystem, with its core role being payment for transactions and computation. When users submit transactions, they pay two fee components: a base fee and a priority fee. The base fee is burned, meaning it is permanently removed from circulation, while the priority fee goes to validators. The base fee adjusts automatically based on network congestion, increasing when demand rises. Following The Merge, new ETH is issued via staking rewards rather than mining, and validators earn these rewards for helping secure consensus. The current annual ETH issuance rate is ~0.5%, which is much lower than the former mining issuance of ~4.3%. Because issuance is reduced and base fees are burned, ETH can become deflationary when network usage is high. ETH’s value is tied to its utility on Ethereum and its limited supply, since it is required for everything from sending transactions to deploying smart contracts.
