El gobierno de Guatemala informó el jueves que retiró el cargo de cónsul honorario al mexicano Raúl Rocha Cantú, copropietario de Miss Universo, quien enfrenta en su país acusaciones de tráfico de drogas, armas y combustible robado.

Rocha Cantú, un empresario del norte de México que en 2024 compró el 50% de las acciones de la organización que dirige el certamen de belleza Miss Universo, era cónsul honorario de Guatemala en la ciudad de Toluca desde 2021.

El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Guatemala explicó en un comunicado que decidió derogar ese nombramiento tras constatar un incumplimiento de las normas del país.

"Se recibió un informe por parte de la embajada de Guatemala en México indicando que la dirección del Consulado Honorario habría cambiado sin notificación ni autorización previa", señaló.

La Cancillería guatemalteca dijo que el proceso para retirar del cargo al Rocha Cantú comenzó en octubre antes de que la mexicana Fátima Bosch ganara la semana pasada la edicion de Miss Universo de este año realizada en Tailandia.

Sin embargo, la "destitución se agilizó debido a los sucesos recientes, por lo que se actuó de manera inmediata", aseguró.

La víspera, la Fiscalía General mexicana confirmó que Rocha Cantú está implicado en un caso abierto en 2024 por tráfico de armas, de drogas y combustible robado.

El empresario había sido nombrado cónsul honorairo de Guatemala durante el gobierno derechista del presidente Alejandro Giammattei (2020-2024), antecesor del actual mandatario Bernardo Arévalo.

El triunfo de Bosch en Miss Universo 2025 ha estado marcado por una ola de críticas en redes sociales y señalamientos de que su triunfo fue manipulado.

Otra copropietaria del concurso, la magnate de los medios tailandesa Jakapong Jakrajutatip es buscada por autoridades de Bangkok por un presunto fraude de casi un millón de dólares.
