Use three CFD trading strategies with clear chart settings, entry triggers, stops, targets and worked examples for swing, day and scalping trades.

Practical CFD trading strategies turn a chart observation into a decision: enter at an acceptable price, wait for confirmation, or skip the trade. That requires specific chart settings, an entry trigger, a stop, a profit exit and a deadline.

The three templates below cover a trend pullback for swing trading, an opening-range breakout for day trading, and a range-rejection setup for scalping. Each includes rules that can be applied to historical charts.

These are educational rule sets for testing. Their exact parameters have not been backtested for this article. All example prices, indicator conditions, fees and outcomes are hypothetical, rather than current market signals or MEXC fee quotations.

Use Completed Candles and Executable Prices

Set moving averages to use closing prices. EMA means exponential moving average, which gives greater weight to recent prices. A daily 20 EMA and a four-hour 20 EMA represent different time horizons.

Read signals after the relevant candle closes. A candle that briefly crosses a level and reverses before closing has not satisfied a close-based rule.

The long-trade examples use Ask for entry and Bid for exit. Price profit or loss therefore already reflects the spread. Add commission and applicable swaps separately, without subtracting the spread again.

For each instrument, check its contract size, minimum volume, volume step and permitted stop distance. The XAUUSD CFD trading page provides a starting point for checking gold contract specifications.

Strategy 1: A Trend Pullback for CFD Swing Trading

This setup seeks a resumption of an upward trend after a pullback. It uses the daily chart for direction and the four-hour chart for entry.

Chart settings and entry rules

Add 20-period and 50-period EMAs to the daily chart, and a 20-period EMA to the four-hour chart.

For the long-only test version:

  1. Require the latest completed daily close to be above the daily 20 EMA, with the 20 EMA above the 50 EMA.
  2. Require the daily 20 EMA to be higher than its value five completed daily candles earlier.
  3. While that filter holds, wait for one or more four-hour candles to close at or below their 20 EMA.
  4. The first subsequent four-hour close above its 20 EMA completes the pullback sequence and provides the entry signal.
  5. Consider entry at the first available Ask after that close. Skip if the Ask exceeds the signal candle's close by more than 25% of that candle's high-to-low range.

The last rule limits how far the entry can move away from the completed signal.

Stop, target and time exit

Place the planned stop below the lowest low of the pullback sequence, including the signal candle. For this test version, subtract an additional buffer equal to 10% of the signal candle's high-to-low range.

Define the price-risk distance as entry Ask minus the planned stop. Set the profit target two times that distance above entry.

Close at the first available tradable quote after either a daily close below the daily 20 EMA or the fifth daily close after entry, unless the stop or target has already closed the position.

Before entry, estimate charges over the maximum planned holding period. Skip if the net target gain divided by the planned loss, including a chosen execution allowance, falls below 1.5.

Worked example: a gold CFD pullback

Assume the daily trend filter and four-hour entry conditions have been satisfied:

  • The pullback's lowest low is $3,282.
  • The signal candle has a $20 high-to-low range, producing a $2 stop buffer.
  • Entry Ask is $3,300.
  • The planned stop is $3,280.
  • The price-risk distance is $20, producing a target at $3,340.

Assume a contract with 100 ounces per lot. A 0.02-lot position represents two ounces.

The gross loss at the planned stop is $40, and the gross gain at the target is $80. Suppose commission and estimated swaps over the planned holding period total $4, with a further $4 allowance for slippage on a losing exit.

Assuming a target fill at the planned price, the net target gain is $76. The planned loss allowance is $48. Their ratio is approximately 1.58.

Now suppose the estimated charges are $16 instead of $4. The net target falls to $64, while the planned loss allowance rises to $60. The ratio falls to approximately 1.07, so this version's rules reject the trade.

The chart signal is unchanged. The holding costs change whether the trade qualifies. Actual losses can exceed the allowance during gaps or worse-than-assumed execution.

For calculating the charges used in this decision, see CFD Trading Costs Explained: Spreads, Fees and Swaps.

Strategy 2: An Opening-Range Breakout for CFD Day Trading

This setup tests whether an early session breakout continues after a retest. It defines a repeatable session-based test on an equity index CFD.

The example uses a US equity index and New York local time. The selected CFD may quote outside the underlying cash session; the time window below is a strategy parameter.

Define the range before trading

Use a five-minute chart. Mark the highest high and lowest low between 09:30 and 09:45 New York time, then freeze those boundaries.

For a long entry:

  1. After 09:45, use the first completed five-minute candle that closes above the opening-range high. Test only that first long breakout for the session.
  2. Within the next three five-minute candles, require a retest candle whose low touches or passes below that high but whose close finishes above it.
  3. Cancel the setup if a five-minute candle closes back inside the opening range before a qualifying retest.
  4. Enter at the first available Ask after the qualifying retest closes. Skip if that Ask is more than 10% of the opening-range width above the retest candle's close.

If the retest does not occur within three candles, let the signal expire.

Set the exit before placing the order

Place the stop below the retest candle's low, with a buffer equal to 10% of the opening-range width.

Set the target two times the entry-to-stop distance above entry. Reject the trade if estimated costs and the chosen execution allowance reduce the net reward-to-risk ratio below 1.5.

For this version, allow one trade per session, accept no new entry at or after 10:30, and close any remaining position at the first available quote at or after 11:30. Check the instrument's session availability and applicable swap cutoff before using those times.

Worked example: a breakout followed by a retest

Assume an index CFD opening range runs from 5,980 to 6,000, giving a width of 20 points.

A later five-minute candle closes at 6,003. A qualifying retest then has a low of 5,999 and closes at 6,002.

With an entry Ask of 6,002.5:

  • The stop buffer is two points.
  • The stop is 5,997.
  • The price-risk distance is 5.5 points.
  • The target is 6,013.5.

The maximum entry permitted by the chase filter is 6,004: the retest close of 6,002 plus two points.

If the available Ask has already jumped to 6,008, skip the trade. Keeping the earlier stop and target would leave 11 points of downside against 5.5 points of upside before fees.

Convert points into account-currency amounts using that specific contract's point value. Index CFD point values cannot be assumed to match across instruments or providers.

Strategy 3: A Range-Rejection Setup for CFD Scalping

This setup looks for a brief move back into an established range after price trades below its lower boundary.

The test version below uses EUR/USD during 08:00–10:00 London local time. Check the provider's current rules on short-duration trading before applying it.

Establish the range and wait for rejection

At each full hour, use the previous 12 completed five-minute candles to mark the preceding hour's high and low. Freeze that range for the next hour.

Require at least two separate candles to have traded in the upper 10% of the range and two in the lower 10%, with at least one intervening candle between repeated tests of the same boundary.

Then switch to a one-minute chart:

  1. Wait for a candle to trade below the frozen range low.
  2. Require that candle to close back inside the range, at least 5% of the range width above its lower boundary.
  3. Enter at the next available Ask only if it remains below the range midpoint.
  4. For this EUR/USD test version, require a spread no greater than one pip.

If a one-minute candle closes below the lower boundary before a qualifying rejection, cancel long entries for the remainder of that hour.

Stop, target and maximum duration

Place the stop below the rejection candle's low by a buffer equal to 5% of the frozen range width.

Set the target at the range midpoint. Skip if the net reward-to-risk ratio is below 1.5 after estimated costs and the chosen execution allowance.

Close at the first available quote after the fifth subsequent one-minute candle closes if neither stop nor target has been reached. Allow only one attempt per hour in this version.

Worked example: why the spread can reject the trade

Assume the frozen EUR/USD range is 1.1000–1.1020. Its width is 20 pips, its midpoint is 1.1010, and the stop buffer is one pip.

A rejection candle has a Bid low of 1.0999 and closes at 1.1001. The next available Ask is 1.1002.

That gives:

  • Entry at 1.1002.
  • Stop at 1.0998.
  • Target at 1.1010.
  • Gross downside of four pips and gross upside of eight pips.

Suppose commission and the execution allowance, expressed in pip equivalents for the selected position, total 0.5 pip on each outcome. The adjusted upside is 7.5 pips and downside is 4.5 pips, giving a ratio of approximately 1.67.

If the Bid remains 1.1001 but the Ask widens to 1.1004, the three-pip spread fails the entry cap. The same stop and target would also leave only six pips of upside against six pips of downside before commission.

Translate the Signal Into a CFD Order

When using MEXC CFD, select the exact instrument and check its contract specification before converting a planned exposure into lots.

Before submitting an order, record the intended volume, maximum acceptable entry, stop, target and time exit. Confirm whether the stop and target fields expect prices or distances, and whether the proposed levels meet the instrument's current restrictions.

After execution, verify the actual fill, volume and accepted stop and target on the position. An intended stop that was rejected provides no protection.

Check margin separately from the planned stop loss. CFD Margin and Leverage Explained: Formulas & Examples explains why the amount reserved as margin differs from the amount exposed to a price move.

MEXC's CFD FAQ states that simultaneous long and short positions remain independent. When the strategy requires an exit, use the position-closing action; an opposite order can leave both trades open.

Test These CFD Trading Strategies Without Selecting Only Winning Charts

Choose one template, one instrument and a fixed historical period. Record every qualifying signal, including trades rejected by spread, entry-price or holding-cost filters.

For an initial rules audit, review 50 consecutive qualifying setups, then freeze the rules and evaluate a separate later sample. Fifty setups are a practical starting workload, not proof of profitability.

For each setup, record the signal time, entry quote, stop, target, exit reason, fees and net result. Enter after confirmation; do not assume a fill at a candle's closing price if that quote was unavailable.

If stop and target both fall within one historical candle, use finer data to establish the sequence or mark the outcome as unresolved. Do not automatically count it as a win.

Compare results under observed costs and a more expensive execution scenario. Examine drawdowns and losing streaks alongside average net profit or loss.

MEXC's view is that the no-trade rules deserve the same testing as entries. The breakout expiry, spread cap and holding-cost limit determine which signals become positions. Recording those rejected setups makes their effect measurable.

FAQ

Which CFD trading strategies should I test first?

Choose the version whose monitoring schedule you can maintain. The swing template needs checks at four-hour and daily closes plus ongoing margin monitoring. The day-trading template needs availability during its selected session. The scalping template requires continuous attention while a position is open.

Can I reverse these rules for short trades?

A short version needs its own test, including reversed trend and price conditions, executable Bid entry and Ask exit prices, and the applicable short swap. Do not assume the long version's costs or results transfer unchanged.

Can I keep a failed day trade open as a swing trade?

That changes the tested strategy. A swing trade needs its own entry conditions, stop, holding-cost allowance and time exit. Reaching the intraday deadline without a profit is an exit condition in the templates above.

Risk Warning

These templates are educational and have not been validated as profitable systems. CFDs involve leverage, and gaps, slippage or forced liquidation can produce losses beyond a planned stop-loss allowance. Historical testing cannot guarantee future results.
