Pre-Market Briefing on Oct 22: Supermicro Rose 9.55% After Lifting Its Quarterly Revenue Range by $4B; Focus on Western Digital Reports Tonight

1. Today's Market: All Three Indexes Rose and Technology Led Again

Unit: %, single-day change on October 21; all three readings are positive, so the bars are drawn from zero on one shared scale. The Nasdaq reads +1.05%, the Dow +0.69% and the S&P 500 +0.58%.

The three indexes moved the same way, with the Nasdaq ahead. The sectors say the same thing: technology gained 1.67% and led every large sector, while communication services fell 1.11% and came last.

On a day when everything rises, the question worth asking is what rose most, because that is where the money went. Technology and communication services both sit inside the broad technology complex, yet they were 2.78 points apart on the day, a wider spread than any single index moved. The index tells you the direction; the sector ranking tells you what was picked inside that direction.

2. Stock in Focus: Supermicro +9.55%, 4.25 Points Ahead of the Next Name

Unit: %. These six are grouped by hand as server and storage hardware; the last one, Lam Research, is a semiconductor equipment stock from the same sector that fell on the day and is shown as a contrast. The set spans positive and negative, so a zero line is drawn and all six share one scale. Supermicro sits at one end on +9.55% and Lam Research at the other on −1.00%, 10.55 points apart. 🔴 The Nasdaq computer hardware average fell 2.09% that day, but it was held down by the smaller names: the large names on this chart all rose.

What moved it is a pre-announcement, not a set of results. The company lifted its quarterly revenue estimate to $18.5-19.5B from $14.5-15.5B, moving the range up by $4B, and raised the gross margin range to 12.0-12.5% from 10.4-10.8%, pointing to stronger-than-expected demand for AI servers. Full quarterly results come on November 3, and that is when the detail on shipments and customer mix becomes visible. The stock closed at $35.57, adding about $2.0B to a $23.4B company, on volume 1.78 times its average, so the move came on volume rather than on a thin tape. Four other large names in the set read the same signal: Dell +5.30%, Western Digital +3.89%, HPE +3.73% and Seagate +3.22%. The supporting name is Applied Digital (APLD), up 8.54% at $20.98, which is building a 50 megawatt AI data center in a joint venture with a green data center developer, holding 51% itself and leasing the site to a company it controls, so the building and the lease are locked in together.

Five Dimensions: Both Peer Measures a Full 100, Volatility Weakest at 40

Unit: 0 to 100, against peers and its own one-year history, measured over a one-year window rather than the single session. Peer rank and relative strength both score the full 100, valuation heat reads 59, trend position 46, and the weakest, volatility, reads 40.

The two peer measures describe where it stands among its peers, while trend position at 46 describes where it stands in its own one-year range: different reference sets, so "strongest among peers" and "only mid-range against itself" hold at once. Read volatility at 40 alongside them and the picture fills in: a stock that is far stronger than its peers, is not yet in the upper half of its own year, moves a good deal, and travelled 9.55% in a single session. A perfect peer score does not mean the price is already high, and the two need to be read apart.

3. What to Watch Tonight: Western Digital Reports After the Close

  • Pre-open|Nokia (NOK) and TTM Technologies (TTMI)
  • At 12:30|Initial jobless claims Consensus 200,000 against 199,000 before; September leading economic indicators follow at 14:00
  • After 20:00|Western Digital (WDC) reports after the close Call at 20:30; Bloom Energy, Deckers and Verisign report the same evening
  • The Fed gives no direction this week October 17 to 29 is the pre-meeting blackout, so no official speaks
  • The macro focus is Friday The October S&P Global manufacturing and services PMI arrive on the 23rd

Unit: %, each fiscal quarter's revenue against the quarter before, matching revenue of $2.82B, $3.02B, $3.34B and $3.75B; all four bars are drawn from zero on one shared scale. 26Q2 reads 7.1%, 26Q3 10.6%, 26Q4 12.3% and the 27Q1 guide 9.4%.

  • Read the sequential line, not the year-over-year one Year over year carries the low base from the start of last year's storage pricing cycle and has run above 40% for four straight quarters, which hides whether momentum is still building; the sequential line strips the base out and shows whether the curve is turning
  • Two quarters of acceleration, then the company taps the brake itself After 7.1, 10.6 and 12.3, the new quarter is guided back to 9.4; ⚠ the fourth bar is derived from the company's $4.1B midpoint and is guidance rather than a result
  • The business and the share price have parted company The stock trades at $378.51 against a 52-week high of $799.87, about 53% below it; what the market doubts is not demand but how long this pricing cycle runs

  • The first set to check tonight is the new guide The $4.1B midpoint implies 9.4% sequential growth, slower than the 12.3% just delivered. Lam Research reported record revenue up 54% last night with guidance above consensus and still fell about 6.8% after the close, so beating expectations is not the same as rising
  • The second set is whether margin and volume move together Non-GAAP gross margin was 54.4% last quarter against guidance of 55% to 56%. If margin lands at the low end and exabyte growth does not climb back from 22%, the part of growth that price was carrying starts to shrink

4. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: The computer hardware average fell 2.09%. Why is every large name on the chart up?
A: Because a sector average weighs every member alike, and what dragged it down that day was the smaller names. The large server and storage stocks on the chart all rose: Supermicro +9.55%, Dell +5.30%, Western Digital +3.89%, HPE +3.73% and Seagate +3.22%. So Supermicro moved against the sector average, but it did not move alone, because the large names in its set went the same way. Lam Research at the bottom is a semiconductor equipment stock shown as a contrast, not a server and storage peer.

Q: Why can a pre-announcement move a stock on its own, without waiting for results?
A: Before full results, a US company whose numbers sit far from the guidance it gave will often publish a pre-announcement. Three things are worth reading in one: how far the new range sits from the old, which way the margin range moves, and when the full results arrive. Supermicro lifted its revenue range by $4B and raised the margin range with it, both pointing the same way, so the market read it as a demand signal rather than an accounting adjustment. It is still a pre-announcement, and full results come on November 3.

Q: Western Digital revenue rose 44% last quarter. Why watch gross margin tonight?
A: Because about half of that 44% is not extra volume. Exabytes shipped rose only 22% in the same quarter, so the 22-point gap is unit price: management said on the call that the blended price per terabyte rose from high single digits to high teens year over year. When supply is tight, the high-capacity drives cloud customers want cannot be scheduled quickly, and price becomes the adjustment. Price-led growth shows up in gross margin first, so last quarter's 54.4% and this quarter's 55% to 56% guide say more about whether the pricing holds than the revenue growth rate does.
